i know the stock difference between the 2 but say a 00gt engine was put into a 95 and a 97 would there be any difference in performance. i know that the 96+ have a better intake etc but when engine swapped is there ne difference???

if you swap in a Gt motor you have to use the new PI manifold anyway...so it doesnt matter what kind of manifold the 94-95 has v. the 96-97 if you are taking the motor out anyway.

The 96 - 97 car is a little bit lighter than a 94 - 95, however if both have a 00 GT motor and the drivetrain is the same, the weight difference likely won't play a factor and the cars should run about the same! Just be careful as all 96 - 97 had 3.27 rear gears from the factory, 94 - 95's could have 3.08 which would slow it down!

thanks for the info. thats what i figured but just wasnt sure. and a 327 trac loc unit isnt that hard to come by is it and they should be able to be had for a relatively cheap price. is swapping rear ends a very hard process on these cars?

If you are swapping out the entire pumpkin, it shouldn't be too bad, but I would guess that if you are asking generally if it is a hard thing to do or not, you might want to have someone knowledgeable with you to do it.

ON THE REAR END...

Personally I would rather see a brand new complete FRPP 3.73 carrier rather then mess with installing gears in your old one or going the junkyard route. When you do decide on what route you wish to go you might want to consider the following 'other' mods now while you are back there. (remember Longterm plan??)

Fuel pump upgrade (255LPH). The stock pump is a POS so if you are dropping the rear you might as well drop the tank (or at least one side:tongue: ). A Stang pump will work fine but you might have to buy the 'sock/filter' that attaches to the bottem of the pump if it's not included in the kit. Do not forget a new O-ring for the tank seal.

IRS bushings. The stock IRS bushings can wearout and cause a clunk so replace them when you do the rear. Pioneer or MN12Performance.com has them.

Driveshaft upgrade (MKVIII or better). The stock shaft can be a bit weak at high RPM's and give you a case of the vibes. I would go with a Dennis R. Driveshaft or have one made by a reptuble local shop. The Mark VIII is better as far as it exploding but it will still give you a case of the vibes but not death (in most cases).

Inspect your rear end Hub/bearings. Bearing/hub issues are very common problem on the MN12's and the passenger side (power side for most) is normally the one to go first. With the car in the air see if there is any 'play' in the rear wheels.

sorry to post in your thread 96v8coogar but i have a quiestion for scott , about the irs bushings i was gone order mines from mn12 performance but they never called me back so i gave up on thouse guys do you have a number for pioneer that you mentioned or any other places i could get em from i might as well do em now since i have the pumpkin lowered .

damnit jurgen you think you can just come in to my thread and talk about something else. man the nerve you have...:D just playin. but to frankencougie i think a frpp pumpkin would be a good idea but theyre like 700 bucks arent they? i think that it would be easy enough to find a 327 trac loc unit for significantly cheaper and then just add 355 or 373 gears. im not totally sure. are the reinhart drivesahftgs worth their coin? i know most of the stuff he makes is topnotch but im just leaning as i go.

Are you sure you don't already have a 3.27 t-lok rearend?

Basically a gear install is gonna cost you like $500+$140 gears. Unless you got some good connections.

This is why you buy a 3.73 FRPP pumpkin for $530.

Yeah, Cooger, you've already got 3.27 gears, might not be a locker but it's still 3.27s.

The metal matrix DS is worth it's coin as you put it, when I go blown it'll be on my list. Not worth the money for me now as I've got 3.08s out back and my car has only seen 100 mph 2 times in my possession, there's just no need for it until I get some more gear.

Swapping in the whole pumpkin unit is not too awful bad, but swapping gears and a trac-loc into your diff is something you don't want to tackle on your own, and I wouldn't buy a used rear end from a boneyard, but that's just my thing..

The FRPP lists for $700, but Dan Newman discounts them to members. I think he sells them $630 + shipping .. but worth every penny...

The Reinhart driveshaft is also sweet.

I agree with Scott, try to picture the end product, and what all it's gonna take to get there

I replaced the TC, trans (Reinhart Bullet Proof), driveshaft (Reinhart), pumpkin, in-tank fuel pump, IRS bushings, rear knuckle bushings, rear sway bar, and rear shocks all at the same time. Once you're back there taking things apart any or all of those swaps is a good idea. The more you can do now, they less you'll have to do later..

ohhh now i feel dumb i forgot to mention that i am possibly going to be picking up a 94 v8 with like 60000 miles. this post was in reference to that. my cougar has 3.27 track loc. ive left some pretty nice twin marks around the H-Town area. im still kinda iffy about the looks of my cougar and thats why i might be parting with it and getting that low mile bird

also why were just talking about rear ends, is it possible to put a solid axle like they have in the stangs or would that just be a no good idea.

Yes it's possible. Nobody does it though, there's no point. We've got a good handling car, why take away the most crucial part of the good handling?

As far as modifying the existing engine and drivetrain is concerned, you are better off starting with the 96 Cougar. If you are talking about doing a whole scale engine/trans swap, putting late model PI engine and trans in whichever you build, it won't matter which one you work with. The '96 stock trans is stronger than the '94 stock trans... but if your gonna replace the trans, it won't matter...

Everybody's taste in cars is different and if you absolutely can't live with a Cougar, no matter what, so be it... but before you make up your mind, take a look at "Coogie", Scott's Cougar, it might just change your mind..... and pictures don't do her justice...

wheres some pics of coogie. i know that there are awesome looking cougars. enough is enough. im keepin the cougar. i just wish i would do my first mod so i wouldnt want to sell it. well looks like the air silencer will be coming out right about now. im gonna go see wat i can do. ill prolly be back in a minute saying whut did i just break

ohh okm frankencougies. yea i love his setup. his car looks damn good too. i want his hood/hoodscoop. not to mention everyhting under the hood. hes sort of a role model out here. at least he is to me. unfortunatly hes all the way down south and i dont get to have his expertise looking over my ride, but maybe someday ill make it down there for a lil visit
