I know the E stands for Electronic. But What is electronic? Both cars have a button for putting the trans into O/D. Just curious on what the difference is?

AOD doesn't have an electical button for engaging OD. Read up in the Trany tech articles, first page of the "Ford OD Transmissions 101" article, the introduction. Even though it doesn't have much information on the AOD, the single paragraph should contain what you need.

The aod doesn’t have any buttons of any kind (unless you have spent a lot of money on a lentech valve body). The aod is completely mechanically controlled. The aod-e is electronically controlled by the vehicles ecm. They do share many internal parts and have the same gearing but in terms of control they are apple and oranges.

Don't forget the AOD is cable operated which is usually the cause of failure.
