If it looks dirty, it is. I mean, you will probably see large dark areas on the filter, that is dirt; rinse it, let it dry and then lightly spray the oil on. Let that dry a few hours before driving and then after a few days of driving you will want to take the MAF out of the top of the MAF housing and spray the wires with brake cleaner. Then you will have a fresh filter, and clean MAF wires.
It's OK to take an extra step have the best of both worlds: good filter and clean MAF wires.
