Ok so if I get this Mark VIII engine, wiring harness, and computer, what would I have to have to install it in the Bird and have it run? I have a list of other upgrades that will be happening later this year, but my brother is shipping off to the Army and we would like to have this swap done before he leaves for at least one track run... It will take me 4 days to get the engine, but I just need to know what else I will have to have to swap it in. Thanx

It is coming from a '94 Mark and going into a '94 Bird.

I have seen it done with the stock T-Bird computer reflashed with additional stuff to make the IMRC's work (Teeps and others), I have seen the whole Mark VIII underhood harness used which puts your PCM on the wrong wide of the car but the Mark dash was used too (Lizgirl), and I have seen the Mark VIII PCM and VCRM spliced into the T-Bird harness and the wires on the Mark VIII engine lengthened to reach the T-bird's connector (what I did).

Does the engine come with acessories?

Ah forget it, do a search, all your answers are already here, guaranteed.

Ok so I took your suggestion and searched again... I have yet to find the answer to whether or not I will need a chip if I am getting the wiring harness and computer from the Mark. I have found the half a dozen posts where you have said the same thing, that there are 3 different ways to put it in. What I am asking is most directly applicable to what you did, did you need a chip? Ohh and yes it comes with all the accesories... I checked into that. Do you think I should replace the waterpump in the engine? The guy I am getting it from suggested it, but if I don't need to I would rather not... Anyways, please let me know if I can run it without the chip. Like I have said before, if it will run without the chip for the time being I will be purchasing the engine as soon as I recieve word that it will....

Ohh and I am putting together a list of all my questions and all the answers I get and making a FAQ for the DOHC Mark 8 swap... That way people can find this information quickly rather than spending 12+ hours looking into it...

I going to assume that since no one said I NEED a chip to make it run, I am going to go ahead and order the engine, computer, and wiring harness...

I would also recommend getting GOOD (i.e. OEM, EVTM's) schematics for the EXACT years that you're swapping things between. Assuming that Ford kept color codes the same between years can get you into trouble.

With my DOHC swap that I'm slowly working on, I'm going to keep the stock 94 T'Bird EEC and have it chiped to handle the new flow of the engine. I'll activate the IMRC's externally based on a dyno of them open and then closed. I'm not too worried about the knock sensors since I'll be about 9:1 compression.

Wish me luck. (But we're talking next year at the earliest). I'm just waiting for my SOHC 4.6L go give up the ghost. :D

Good luck.

Cool. I am swapping a '94 into a '94... I will go get the schematics from a dealership though just to be safe. Appreciate the input.

I swapped a Mark VIII in my 95 LX using the Bird computer & wiring harness, modifying it where necessary to match the Marks sensors etc. It really took very little modification as most of the connectors are the same. I had the computer reflashed to the Mark engines parameters. I used MSD Tach Driver, Window Switch & relay set up to operate the IMRCs. It's been about 9 months now & I've had no problems.

What about IMRC deletes? Would it make it any easier?
Yes it would be however if they are not hooked up they are normally open. When hooked up the vacuum solenoid keeps them closed until you hit 3000 rpm (or what ever you preset the MSD window switch for). At 3000 the solenoid de-energizes & they flip open. With them open all the time you lose some low end torque. I didn't hook mine up right away & this is what I experienced. It's like driving a 4 barrel carbed car with the secondaries open all the time.

I would have posted to say you don't need a chip, but you were posting that when I left for Minnesote so I didn't see it. If you use the Mark VIII computer and engine, there is really no need for a chip, the engine is happy, that is how it came. A chip will improve gas mileage on a Mark engine substantially though.

If you want some wiring notes I can get you copies of mine, or if you aren't in a hurry I will get a PDF made when I get back to my normal job at work, I am covereing another job while someone is on military leave for a month. If you want copies PM me, if you can wait for the PDF, it will be 3-4 weeks probably before I get it scanned unles sI have a little spare time some night at work to go up to the scanner and do it.

Thanx for the reply. I won't be able to work on it until I get back from Florida which won't be for 3 weeks. So I can wait, thank you for the info. Outta curiosity, what kinda gas mileage does a DOHC get?

4 Cam Bird,

So if you use the Mark Engine Harness and Mark computer, you don't have to worry about the IMRC's at all...right?

I know this has been answered before, but I'll ask here since it's relevent. Is the 32V 4.6/Mark 4R70W tranny combo the same length as the stock bird's setup? Would the drive shaft need to be shortened/lengtheded to make this work?

The reason I ask is that the tranny also connects to the engine wiring harness, but I would expect them to be the same, and I have a line a Mark engine/tranny.

Being that I am going to use a marauder torque converter which will make a stall of about 2400-2500, can I delete the IMRC's? Being that they open like 3000 rpm anyway.
