I just finished swapping my 3.73s for 4.30s (and forced lube mod) and HIGHLY recommend them. I haven't gotten on it yet (break-in), but the car is a lot snappier. Anyone that has a dohc motor should forget about 3.55s, 3.73s, or even 4.10s. The 3.55s and 3.73s are a waste of time and money. Period.

I don't have the coin for a speed-cal at the moment (had the gears in my closet for almost a year, at the time i was turning wrenches and now college=no money), so I just threw in a 23 tooth gear. My speedo is off a little, but nothing that isn't tolerable, in the meantime it should keep me from speeding. I'm going to get a speed-cal in about a month, and am banking on the 23 tooth gear lasting that long.

So far I have had no whining whatsoever which is more than I can say for my old set of used 3.73s (slight whine at 40-45). I took a quick spin with the car and at 60mph (as indicated by the speedo, probably actually around 57mph give or take) i'm only turning about 2400 rpms. In my opinion this is totally liveable and streetable. I would not hesitate to road trip this car as 90mph highway blasts will get you tickets anyway.

I would love to chuck my stock mark 8 converter, but that's not in the near future (tuition money). I like to think of my current trans as a 'fill-in' until I graduate and throw in a T-56 anyway (4.30s may have to be changed again, haven't really looked into that aspect yet). In closing, DON'T FEAR THE GEAR, now I wish I would have put on my big boy pants and went straight for the 4.56s :D

Just a point for your future plans, Mcleod Industries is your friend for swapping in a T-56. If you get one with the GM gearset (IE LS1 F-Body) you'll have a .50 6th gear dropping your current highway rpms by almost 30%.

Wow, now you are making me think I should build my new rear with 4.10s. I'm just wondering how much highway mileage i would lose by going from 3.73 to 4.10.

I thought long and hard on the 3.73 vs. 4.10 gears. I chose 3.73's. I would love to get the 4.10's, but the gas mileage loss would definately add up. I am happy with my choice, happy enough that I actually bought a second 3.73 diff, trak-lok this time (nothing but problems with first 3.73 diff ever since install). I didn't even think about choosing any higher. With my SCT ecu flash, Darrin trans, marauder converter, and PI engine, it has plenty enough gear for tons of fun on the street, which leads to higher fuel cost anyways!

It is insane how short/torquey manual first has with just the 3.73s, and I absolutely love my third gear - 2nd-3rd shift at 70 is awesome middle ground speed/accel for me. It really comes down to what you can afford though.
