if you take it out you will probably see that the plastic that connects to the metal rod snaped. happened to me thanks to a drunk friend, easy to replace though no need to take the door panel off
Mine broke as well on my 92 (should be similar I would think) but somehow the piece that the handle pivoted (rotated) on was missing so I put part of a nail in there and it worked better than the other door did
