When mine was broken into, my insurance company forced me to take it to a shop, since the loan's not paid off yet. They can get a new plate with the handle and lock in it, they just cut out the old one, welded in the new one, ground it down and repainted it.

well they don't cut any structural supports, just the skin of the door. I would take it to a shop and have them do it, unless you're skilled with cutting, welding, and grinding sheetmetal. It ended up being very nice, I can't even tell where they cut and welded.

Just to clear things up.
The handle is only held on there with rivets. lift the handle and drill em out. Replacement rivets are readily attainable, but do require a large rivet gun. you'll need to get inside the trim panel to disconnect the rods that lead to the latch.
no cutting
no welding
