I didnt know where to put this thread. My brother has a C-150(4 door bronco) with an e4OD. 3-4 months ago we drained the old mercon and put in new Motorcraft mercon V. Now he has problems of it hitting the rev limiter under heavy load. We scanned it this morning and it had dtc p0628 or 648 (excessive converter clutch slippage). I dont fully know how this is monitored, but would it require only a TC change (we want to install a navigator converter) or are some of the other clutches ruined from the mercon V. I heard this new stuff was safe for e4OD and 4r100. Is there a better stock converter than 03 navigator? I know someone here knows their E4OD stuff. Thanks

You guys suck. Luckily, the symptoms have not resurfaced.

The problem is likely due to a faulty design torque converter lockup piston. The outer "friction area" is riveted to the inner damper. In 97 ford revised it and made the whole piston out of one piece and riveted the damper to the inside. On the early ones the rivets come loose and allow hydraulic pressure to transfer to the side it doesn't belong on and that frys the converter clutch.

Wow, you come on an MN12/FN10 forum that uses AODs, 4R70Ws, and M5R2s and complain when nobody speedily answers a question about an E4OD? You sir are lame.
The AOD and E4OD are very similar. The AOD is a C4 with an Overdrive, the E4OD is a C6 with an overdrive, not very different.

To the OP, I would check out http://www.fordtruckfanatics.com/forum they have a great community of guys that know everything about these trucks. :)

lol, nobody around here has swapped in a 4r100 yet? I doubt there is room with the stock floorpan. I am pleased to hear the info on the old TCs, I just need to find out what would be a suitable replacement. He may not touch it now if the problems dont come back. The main thing I wanted info on was to make sure the new Mercon V didnt screw up his transmission. I suggested it to him since it beats the crap out of original mercon in a 4r70w. and I had also read a few places that they had reformulated motorcraft Mercon V to become the all-around replacement for original motorcraft Mercon. Thanks for the responses, even though they took so long the truck fixed itself! lol thanks again

Cool. How much does a pretty much stock upgraded converter typically go for? I assume you are saying that 97+ e4od/4r100 TCs have the upgraded piston/friction area. See, I still got some good info from this post since the people on TCCOA are so awesome, thats why I've been around here for 10 years. Thankfully we have some transmission specialists in the house!
