Re: Fix for shifter button that pops off.

I may be wrong, but proper button replacement requires removing the shifter -- which seems like an onerous job. Also, my LX has a leather wrapped shifter handle. The leather would need to be removed (destroyed).

I was unable to find the correct part for my '94 Bird, but I did find a button for the '97 Bird (F7SZ-7C488-AA). The '97 part is different but with minor surgery it can be modified to work on a '94. The '97 button also has a thinner shaft. The fit is a bit loose (side to side), but it works. I may try this again and add plastic to the sides of the shaft to give it a better fit.

I've been driving for over a month with the new button without any issues -- no jamming, no popping out. The old button was popping out about once a week.

Instructions:
1) Pull out old button.
2) Cut a V notch in the new button (see photo), so it can be pushed onto shifter shaft.
3) Cut away extra plastic on the '97 part (see photo).
4) Put old spring on new button.
5) Insert modified button into handle and push onto shaft.
6) You're done.

The leather doesn't have to be removed to remove the shifter handle, and the handle doesn't have to be completely removed to change the button, just lifted up slightly. There is a metal clip that looks like a heavy duty staple going in from the front of the shifter, about 2/3rds of the way down. Get in there with a small flat screwdriver or a pick and pull that clip out. Now lift the shifter up slightly, only needs to come up about a half an inch to get enough clearance to get the new button in. Don't force it or pull it too far because the wiring for the O/D cancel button goes through the shifter, and if you yank up on it, you can break those wires. Once the new button is in, push down on the handle and re-install the metal staple clip, and you are done. To do it right honestly would have taken probably half as long as it took you to cut up the new button.

99% of the cutting was needed because I could not find the correct part, not because of my workaround. I would still need to cut the '97 part to work on my '94.

For a sec, I thought you were suggesting to wire in this button for your OD functionality... and then I realized I was reading the TCCOA.com and not the 24hoursoflemons.com forums.
