2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R - Click above for high-res image gallery

In the world of Hot Wheels collecting, there are two types of people: those who open and those who don't. We tend to fall into the third, more populous category of those who demolition derby.

Clearly, we could never have demonstrated the kind of self-restraint it takes to purchase a brand-new 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R and leave it in its original factory wrapping. Fortunately, there are people out there like the seller of this particular machine. According to the eBay Motors listing, there are a mere 11 miles on the odometer, and the plastic you see on the hood and fenders is the same garb that the mean Mustang wore off the production line.

Even the front splitter and brake cooling ducts are in their original bubble wrap in the trunk, and the interior is swaddled in plenty of FoMoCo plastic. That means that this pony is as close to a factory-new Cobra R that you could possibly buy today.

Ford famously minted a mere 300 examples of the Cobra R in 2000. The cars were bare bones, street-legal racers, and while the 5.4-liter V8 under the hood was supposed to churn out 385 ponies, owners typically found the engine to return those numbers at the wheels, not the crank. When launched, Motor Trend found the car capable of 0-60 mph runs in the 4.4 second range and a skid pad effort of over 1.0 g.

So, what's it worth? Hard to say, but the auction has a Buy it Now price of $70,000, though the seller is also entertaining offers. Check out the auction here. Thanks for the tip, Brent!

$70K sounds like a real fair price considering the original price was $55K. And you know it hasn't been abused/raced.

He should hang onto that. Barret Jackson in 25 years, he'd make a pretty penny. He already has it so why not. I noticed that it has the pony in front as opposed to the cobra emblem. Anyone know why? I'm not familiar with variations of mustangs...

Every 94-04 Cobra you see with a Cobra emblem in the grill was added by the owner, they all came with pony's from the factory

That wing is Ugly!

They took some of the wrapping off to take the pictures that'll cost 'em. :tongue:

All that wrap on the paint could potentially damage the paint, what with the glue on there and the fact that it's supposed to be removed within 2 weeks or so.

Still, a good find!

I would buy it, then take all that plastic off the exterior, and drive it away. :zdevil: Yeah, I would be that guy.

I'd do the same. I never cared for the "original packaging" collectors, it screams of OCD.

This screams "bad investment" to me.
Even if this guy was a dealer and bought the car at invoice ($49292.80), at best he's hoping for a gross profit of $20702.20.
Basically, for an 11 year span, we're talking an annual interest rate of 3.27%.

That's not including storage fees for something as big as a car, either.

This guy would have been better off keeping the money in the bank -- unless during this time he received some kind of "value" in staring at the car still in the wrapper.

Plus, with the march of technology, this car has been obsoleted.
After all, wouldn't most of you folks want the latest Shelby GT500 over this car?

I think investing in cars is idiotic to begin with, no arguments there. However, I'd easily take it over the GT500. The longblock is derived directly off the Cobra R, the only thing that's changed was the addition of a sissy power adder:tongue: Frankly, the S197 didn't advance very far with technology over the SN95 besides chassis structure and the front end layout, its still got a SRA and is needlessly larger than it should.

Yes, BUT, wouldn't a collector want a car that was one of only 300 made, unlike the GT500? They made less 2000 Cobra R's than they did 2009 GT500KR's

Don't confuse rarity with value. Just because a vehicle is "rare" doesn't exactly mean that it's "valuable".

You must also consider brand dillution. Like Miatas, there are dozens of super duper special edition special mach anniversary whatever edition mustangs. A quick search online shows the T-5, High Country Special, Ski Country Special, Challenger, Cobra II, SVO, SSP, Bullitt, Warriors in Pink, Anniversary edition, etc.
10 years after release, how many of these "special" revs command a significant premium over their slightly less rare counterpart? IMO, the big money maker for these special editions is a) the mfg b/c of a higher invoice price and b) the dealer because of the markup they can sucker out of the first buyer.

How many of these special editions achieve the collectability of say a GT350-H? A: not many.

At the end of the day, it's still a Mustang and for every "rare" factory model, there are dozens if not hundreds of slightly differentiated cars. Like it or not, that WILL impact collectable/resale value.

IIRC, they made fewer late 90s early 2000's Z3 Coupes than they did M coupes (the car than looks like a civic hatchback snuck up and mated with a Z3 convertible). Did that increase the resale value of the lower performance Z3? Nope.

I'm not saying it would or did. I'm saying that to a Cobra collector (like a buddy of mine who has 4 Cobras), it may be worth it to him. The fact that he loves those body styles may make him want to spend that kind of money on it.
