Before I clicked on anything, I would verify if it is a phishing attempt.

It appears to be legit, but the site you referenced was created 01 Aug 08 and is owned by Garden City Group, Inc. Which appears to be a law(ish) firm specilizing in Class Action suits.

But the VERY little I can find is that all this was supposed to have happened in 2005.

I got that email and I never click on a link unless I know who it is from.

And I've never had a complaint, so it really doesn't apply to me.

Hopefully someone will do some more research and let us know if it is legit.

Should have clarified my position a bit more. Thanks 94 Daily for the quick slap.

Yeah I do this stuff (web/computer) for a living and did not click the links in the email. I think anyone that has a Paypal account will get that email. However I know someone who did not get the email that does in fact have an account.

There are a couple of lines on the email that bothers me.

To get complete information about the proposed Settlement, the required procedures, the deadlines, your obligations, and your options, you must visit www.steelesettlement.com.

Please do not contact PayPal, or PayPal's customer support about this Notice, or the Settlement. Instead, you must visit www.steelesettlement.com for complete information about the proposed Settlement, the required procedures, the deadlines, your obligations, and your options.

Please do not reply to this message. We are unable to respond to inquiries sent in reply to this email. To contact us, please access the official settlement website at www.steelesettlement.com.

And that the amount is only 3.5 million. Not even a scratch of what they have in the bank. Seems a bit too low.

There was another in 2004 very similar that was legit. And I have seen some post that it is a hoax based on that case.

Yeah, there were just too many things that I didn't like. The clincher was when nothing came up on Google except copies of the email. You would think that a class action lawsuit settlement would be either in the news, on the respective web sites, or in a press release of some kind.

Even searching for the case number ONLY brought up quotes from the email/web site.

Something, somewhere should have been documented about the settlement to provide a second source confirming the settlement.

But if it is a phishing attempt, it is the best I've ever seen!!

Found something:
http://allbusinessauctions.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/paypal-class-action-lawsuit-a-hoax-or-real-you-decide/

So we're not the only ones that just don't know.

I read through that pretty skeptical, but hoping it was legit. I was supposed to have $140 refunded to me from Paypal a few years ago, but never got it because the guy already had withdrawn the money from his account.
