The other day I had to punch my gas pedal through the floor it pass some idiot. Everything was fine until it reached 3 k rpm when power dropped way off, still accelerateing but slowly, engine was even smooth. No check engine light. After that during normal driving could not notice any difference. Yet when I would get on my secret test strip (my friend has a .9 mile runway for small planes on his strawberry farm) About 50% of the time it would do the same thing, have very little power between 3 and 5,500 rpm until it shifts. The second it shifts it' runs great until the RPMs go up. Cleaned the MAF 6 months ago, platinum plugs and wires 25,000 miles ago. I currently am running a can of Techron injector cleaner in it now, noticed problem after I added the techron about half a tank to go. Engine has 125,000 miles, change oil every 4000 miles, it is down a quart at 3,000 miles. Dealer states that 1 quart every 3,000 miles is in spec for new 4.6 engines.
Anybody have any ideas????
Thanks to all,
Richard.

When my car lost power after 3k RPM, it was due to my tranny failing. I burnt up my 1-2 and 2-3 clutches basically... the engine was running smooth the whole time but after 3k rpm it was like it was in neutral. But it could be a number of things... vacuum leak, bad plug/wire, fuel filter, drivetrain.

When this happened to me I replaced the plugs and wires. It felt like I picked up 30hp. I'd at least check the plugs for corrosion and gap.

Thanks to all, The tank got down to about 1/4 tank and problem slowly went away. I have not yet put in fresh fuel, want to change filter and the approx. 10 pounds of crap it must have in it. Will I need any special wrenches to remove the fuel lines and will fuel siphon out of the tank when filter is off the car? You need two wrenches on each end so you don't twist off the line, am I correct? Once Again many Thanks to All.
Richard.

Nope, there is a special tool for cheap. Get it. I'm sure there is an article here on fuel filter changing, use the search thingie. No need to drain the tank, you will get a little drainage though, what's in the lines.
