On a 87 5l, are the valve covers and timing chain cover the same paint color? How about the water pump? I ask because there are lots of engine pics labeled as original, but they have way different colors of these parts. Thank you.

If it’s an 87 T-bird with the SO 5.0, then the valve covers would have been black. If it is an 87 HO motor out of a Mustang or MarkVII, then they would have been unpainted aluminum. The timing cover and water pump were unpainted aluminum regardless.

My Engine is old Ford Blue, as are the Valvecovers; the front cover ant top of the intake are polished and clearcoated, looks good!.

If you were doing this swap, would you paint the engine to look like an original 302 for the 73 or would you keep the engine 87 stock color so it begs questions from onlookers?

If you're doing a restoration, do it og stock, otherwise, do what you want.
