I've only had my cougar for about 5-6 months now and I love the car. its roomy and I just like the way it rides and looks. But I have noticed that there isn't a whole lot that we can do with our cars without spending a grip of money in the process. I havn't put too much money in the engine so far but i have some things already in mind if i don't do the swap. I have been thinking of swapping for a mustang cobra engine or even a decent gt. i like how you can squeeze the horses out of these fairly cheap and the parts aren't very hard to find at all. there is a wide variety of brands and parts to choose from. but i've just started looking into this possibility but i don't realy know the cost of the swap or if it will even work. i'm pretty certain that i could put it in with a different hood and some minor parts to make it compatable. but once again i'm not too sure on the overall cost of this project. so if anyone has done this project about how much did it cost u if you don't mind me asking. and do you feel that it was really worth it. any info you can give should help me with my decision. thanks,

I feel your pain MerKat. The general consensus here is that you should get the PI engine and swap that in. I want to do that same thing but I do not have the mechanical ability. My dealer won't do the swap but maybe some shop will. I have saved about 1800.00 so far, when I get to 4k I will get it done.

If I am wrong about the PI thing someone please correct me!!

Oh about the hood, that shouldn't be a problem. As far as cost, my dealer quoted 3300.00 for a straight swap (97 T-Bird 4.6) A local shop here in Austin Tx. quoted me 2750.00. He also said that he could put in the GT engine. I am a long way away from having the $$$ needed so I didn't go deeper wiht my research.

P.S. There is a guy here who has done the DOHC swap. his screen name is 4 cam Bird. Do a search and you will even see some pics of his FINE work. Love that man's car!!!

PI!

Definately do the PI swap, it's totally worth it. In the grand scheme of things, it's not all that expensive. Even if you don't have much mechanical knowledge, I'd think this could be done with just some patience and perhaps a helping hand. A cobra swap would be expensive and difficult (due to wiring nightmares.) and a GT motor would be the same (except for PI heads on a 99-up 4.6)

To put things into perspective, I'm running 14.22 with NO traction and an EEC not calibrated for my configuration. DanU with his headswap is in the 13.8's, and MikeV with his headswap (and Bullit Intake) is in the 13'7's/13.6's

Cost wise, I spent $1600 on the headswap, and that included ALL new gaskets/seals that i'd be touching, all timing hardware, a new fuel pump (not needed, but i have plans....) a 70mm Throttle Body, and a plethora of other things. While you're in there, be sure to slap on a pair of JBA shorties. (ceramic coated!) or else you'll regret it later. (Thats another 600-700ish)
