Ok so, after some serious searching, I've read a quite a bunch of the exhaust posts here, and frankly, my head is spinning.
Seems to kind of raise more questions for me than provide definitive answers...:D Naturally.... Everybodys looking for different results. Nevertheless, I come to the experienced for some insight....

Ive got a 96 lx sport. 4.6. Bone stock other than a K&N panel filter. I wanna upgrade the exhaust, naturally to achieve any/all performance gains, but, in all honesty, moreso to get the thing to actually SOUND like a v8.
I'm on a real tight budget, but I dont want to randomly chop out anything that will @#% me on the inspection ( I'm in NY ) so I'd prefer to keep the stock cats. Would a simple muffler change be enuff, or do I really have to go for a cat back system?? I wanna hear a REAL difference at idle and all the way thru, but I'm concerned about highway 'buzz'. Please!! 'splain me!! Help me out, guys!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!!

I have a pair of Thrush Turbo mufflers that I'm going to have put on. They were $23ea from Summit Racing.

There is someone here with this exact set up with a sound clip.

Ok, so thats a Bone Stock 97?? The original Muffs were replaced by the Thrush?? I'm trying to find a baseline on the sounds.... Even the soundclips I've found are a little vague.... Damn...there's so MANY amazing clips on basically stock setups, I dunno what to pick from yet... lol!!!
Thanks!!

Sent u a PM... I'm still grappling with the DI/DO... Ive worked on cars for years, I dunno what the hell that is!!!! I'm such a Noob!!!! lolfof!!!
Sorry guys.....
I've got the stock exhaust and I"m looking for the addition that will make it sound like it should, God forbid I get a little HP out of it... Can I keep the stock setup an add a set of Flowmasters and get the sound'??? Does anyone have a preference with the Thrush vs. Flowmasters on a stock exhaust system???

His (Mister-T) is a 95 but it is all stock as far as I know.

DI/DO stands for dual inlet dual outlet. This means the muffler has two pipes going in and two pipes going out. Most mufflers have a single pipe in single pipe out.

With the DI/DO you have to remove the third catalytic converter. If you have smog or safety inspections you can not run a DI/DO.

IMO you will hate the Flowmtasters. The 40 series will drive you nuts due to the drone (constant buzzing sound) at cruising speeds.

No, seriously, I just want some f#n SNAP over the stock system, something that SOUNDS like I could contend with a 'stang, without having to spend $$ I absoluely DO not have. The least amount of stock system I have to kill will make me happy...
I'm WAITING, Gentlemen... lol!!!!
thanks to all for the info...

I've heard that 'bout the Flowmasters on a basically stock system...
And I use this for everything, work, play, screwing around on the weekends.... So IMO, it seems in my present incarnation I may wanna stay with the Thrush Turbos... I DO like the price...lol.... I just wonder if theres' anyone out there thats grafted something that sounds as good onto the back of a stock system.....
Anyone??!??

Ihave turbo muffs. on my 4.6. they sound crappy. Go with flo. mst. or dyno mx. or one of the type. You want a good sound from a stock eng. Thats what you have to do. If you have cams and compression the thats a different story.
