Ok I am venting right now. I lent my TBird out today and it came back 1/2" lower than when it left. I didn't initially notice it however, when I did, upon investigation I found that my passenger side front Bilstein shock collapsed. Now I know this was common on lowered cars that didn't use revalved Bilstein's, however, mine were revalved for the 1" drop so either way, there is no warranty on them.

I guess I am going to visit my parents this weekend and pull the GT out of their garage.

did it collapse the lower mount?

The last couple I've seen that did that was because the shock was not lined up properly when it was put in, and they twisted the shock to get the bolt in, which put additional strain on the lower mounts, which were not designed to have and twisting force on them.

Rich are you referring to the lower mount on the shock. If yes, that is what bent over causing the car to lower. It was even lower this morning, I had 2" of clearance between my 205/70/R15 winter tire and the inner wheel well. Really sucked getting the car on the flat-bed because of that as the car maybe had 3" of ground clearance in the front.

My Bilstein looks a lot like the ones in this thread.

I've seen sport shocks, regular motorcrafts, kybs, and some other cheap ones do that as well. The key point to all the ones I've seen that did that is that the lower shock bolt was forced in without the shock being perfectly straight on the lower mounts. The lower mounts were not designed for the twisting force that that puts on them, and when your lower bushings wear, it binds and twists the lower mounts and they collapse.

Whats the proper way to line them up? I did mine by eye and I had to twist one a little to get the lower shock bolt in.

They should just slide right on with no effort required. If it takes effort to get them to line up, you need to take the upper mount off and realign it.

Munroe shocks any good? It is going to be a week before I could get TBird Sport shocks, I can get the Munroes now? I will be looking at the Koni's in the future, I just need something to get the Bird up and running again ASAP.

I have the moneroe reflex shocks for the bird. Monroe has discontinued them but they are still available. They are firm but not too harsh. I would not recomend them for a lowered car though. The sensetracks are way too soft and the reflex are just perefect. A-1shocks.com

Just curious, why wouldn’t you recommend them for lowered cars?

because of the special valveing it is designed to absorb impacts so it allows more suspension movement than a tokico blue. It is firm under normal driving and dose not beat your guts out on rough roads like the blues will. they might let the car bottom out if you have lowering springs.

I went with the Munroe shocks. The car is at a friend's shop taking up space and that is why I can't wait for shocks. The car will be done tomorrow. I am laughing now as the car had to be lifted to get it on a flat bed and the car had to be lifted to get it on the lift as it was sitting too low. I should have taken pictures to show just how low this car was sitting.

Just bend it back, weld some metal to reinforce it, and reinstall, why can't you do that?
