Hey,

I found a 88 turbo coupe for sale. The guy is asking 3500 Firm. The car is in great shape. The car has 156K. I am just wondering if this is a good deal and with 156k what should I be looking at as far as problems go? thanks

I had a 1985 Mercury Cougar XR-7 2.3 Turbo with 5 speed manual that I bought with 186K on the clock. The turbo had never been off the car, and it ran strong till I sold it with 250K on the clock. The motor is still in use in a 1986 Mustang LX-SVO conversion after having been gone through.

The main points on these is making sure the turbo doesn't coke up. The idle air control is a known trouble point, but if you run it, let the engine idle for 30 seconds to a minute when you stop before shutting it off to cool off the oil in the turbo feed lines so it doesn't clog them up.

Other than that, if it looks good, runs well, and drives well, buy it.

umm 3500 better have a better than stock motor in it as well as a damn good body. I going to go look at an 1988 with a great body however it has a knocking rod. I plan on removing the engine anyway..beef it up to a 390 v8 possibly turbo.:D The guy is asking 650 for it

I think $3500 is on the high side with 156K on the drivetrain.

However, I checked NADA and was VERY suprised at the value!! :beek:

NADA = $4,150

For an Average Retail Value
This vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. A "20-footer".

Edit:
Upon more checking, that NADA price is listed under their "classic" section....

I still say $3500 is too high unless it is perfect. I would check for leaks especially around the turbo.

That price is probably not bad, if everything on the car works. You can check natomessageboard.com and compare their for sale section.

Things to check:
Ride control
Excessive oil in the intercooler
Clutch/Transmission shifting quality
Check for full boost, leaks at this age aren't uncommon, turbo quality
Check all the interior power switches.. some like to not work with age such as the auto ride switch and fuel octane switch
Make sure the seat back isn't broken.. this happened to a good number of cars, but fixable

There's more things you could check, nato has some good resources.
