Hey Everybody,
I have A 96 Thunderbird with a 3.8 L V-6 With automatic transmission and power steering. The problem I am having right now that it has a loud creaking sound coming from the front end whenever I turn the wheel to the right (loud)and when I turn it to the left (not as bad). It Just started making this noise But in the rain it does not make this sound at all.It almost sounds like a real bad creaking door in a horror movie.Could anyone give me some insight as to what this could be and what I need to do about it.Any help would surely be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Take a look at your upper ball-joints...do they still have the rubber boots still on them....mine totally disappeared and they dried out and now i squeak every turn i make in a parking lot....also wouldn't hurt to take a look at the lower ones too.

There are so many possibilities in the front end. You should jack the car up and get under there and look. You can put the parking brake on, start the car while the front end is raised and look/hear for the problem.

BALL JOINTS, BALL JOINTS, Ball joints!,

sorry ive only heard this noise from 3 of my own mn12's and ended up replacing upper and lower ball joints on all of them.

it was making the noise on all 3 cars,

my 96 was making it, all the boots looked good etc, but one broke while it was making that noise one day, glad i was only going 1 mph instead of 50

well the 97 that we used to have also made that noise so i just went ahead and replaced them too.

then the beater 90 i had last winter, one ball joint was already replaced when i bought it, so i replaced the other side lower ball joint, took care of the noise for about a week and ended up doing upper ball joints.

most likely ball joints. but another thing to look at if it isnt...

i had the same symptoms. it would creak when i turned the wheel to the left and kinda when i turned to the right. it would completely stop when it rained. i replaced the ball joints. still creaked. turned out to be my front sway bar bushings. a little bit of lube and problem solved. (though i never heard of any other owner having that problem at least to the extent i had)

buy control arms not balljoints.

About 70 bucks a pop, give or take a few bucks. Rockauto has the control arms.

You can bolt them on in your driveway, not bad at all.

Get an alignment afterwards.

Don't mess with getting balljoints, you need to press the old ones out, and its not worth your time.

Can you buy the lower control arms with the ball joints already installed and also the upper control arms. This noise is driving me nuts.I was told by Pep Boys that it was Strut Rod Bushings. They did the work but did not fix the problem and I lost 341.00.

Both upper and lower arms come with the necessary bushings and ball joints.

I looked at mine, too. They looked great. But after replacing the uppers the noise went away. I had every symptom you described, including "going away when it rains".
