I have this odd problem on occasion with my thunderbird, sometimes, the gas gauge likes to shoot all the way up to full and STAY there, and only resets itself after I shut off the car and leave it for a little while. It's really more of an annoyance than a major mechanical problem, but it bugs me to no end, does anyone know what might be causing this?

It's probably the sending unit in your gas tank bro.

My fuel gauge wonders around a bit too... if I slide sideways especially. ;)

I'd replace the sending unit. I'm not exactly sure if our cars are equipped with the old "balancing coil" style gauges, or if they use the newer electric motors. If they're balancing coil gauges, they'll definitely be effected by the wrong amount of voltage being sent to them, hence the sending unit.

I had a problem like that. My guage would go to full and then to empty and the low fuel light would stay on. Mine was a easy fix. The board in the back of the guage pod was sliding out of its socket causing false readings. Not saying that this was your problem....but its worth checking.
