Are you sure that the needle on the guage isn't just stuck? That would be the first place I would check. Its alot simpler than working on sending units in the tank.

Definitely, take off the instrument bezel and make sure the gauge isn't stuck. If it isn't, but it still doesn't work, then swap the fuel gauge out. Believe me, it will be far cheaper and easier than trying the sending unit first. If none of that helps, check the wiring and the plug at the sending unit (if you can see it with the tank in). If nothing else helps, you will have to drop the tank and check the sending unit. (BIG PAIN)

My 89 had a bad fuel gauge. A new gauge fixed the problem, no sweat.

Check under the car and see if you can smell and/or see any gas leaking. My wiring harness was trashed by gas shooting onto it. The sending unit formed a pin hole on top and when the tank pressurized it would shoot gas into the harness. But like what everybody else said check the gauge first.

my gas gauge was stuck halfway between 1/2 and 1/4...... the shop told me that they would have to drop the tank to fix it. i replaced the gauges and voila... it works... i looked at the old gauge and it was just stuck as pooperscooper said. definitely check that.. good luck
