engine:4.2L V6 Supercharged
City MPG: 17-20
Highway MPG: 24+
Fuel used: Primarily BP 93, because it runs well on it and its all domestic oil--so far.
Average speed: 45 city/ 75+ highway
weather: since build, from 30's to upper 90's
Engine Mileage: about 5000 since build
Mods: a few, bored 25mm, stock 4.2 crank, home ported heads, stock valves, little warmer cam and valve springs, stock Super Coupe rods with ARP bolts, and Speed Pro pistons for a 98 Mustang V6---almost no dish so compression is bumped up to about 9.4to 1, otherwise all stock 89 Super Coupe, so far--more to come
This is an ongoing project but I drive it everyday since I got it built and its a ton of fun--the torque is amazing................Dan

1989 Thunderbird

Engine: 3.8L Naturally aspirated
City MPG: Still calculating.
Highway MPG: 24.175
Fuel Used: 89 octane with "techron" detergents and Lucas injector cleaner additive.
Average highway speed: Using cruise control at 110kph/70mph.
Average Climate: Coastal, humid, sunny 77F to 86F daytime highs.
Mechanical Mods: None
Mileage on the Engine: 290000km / 181250Miles
Comments: I've only had this car a month, and I'm a little surprised it gets as good mileage as it does. The head gaskets were done approx 20000km ago.

Engine: 3.8L
City MPG: not known, I average 27-28 going to and from work average speed 45MPH with a couple stops.
Highway MPG: 30
Fuel Used: 87, ethanol blend
Average Highway speed: 65 to 70 MPH.
Mechanical mods: Removed intake silencer, IGK iridium plugs, 8.8mm wires. It is also lowered 1.25", maybe it reduces drag?
Mileage on Engine: 233,000

Average highway speed: 80 ish
Average Climate: Middle TN anything goes
Mechanical Mods: Engine is stock with very light porting, trans is re-built and shifts tight (it will bark second when ever you want)
Mileage on the Engine: 270,000 ish
Comments: I would love to know how some of you get near 30 on the highway. I have never gotten close to that. The best I ever saw was 26 and some change. But hey, when I did the second set of head gaskets at 251,000 I could still just barely see the original cylinder hone marks.

Average: 19 mpg 75% city, 25% highway est. (21 mpg)
Highest : 26, Omaha to KC and back home with some driving around in KC, just under 400 miles if I remember, one tank of gas, averaging 75 mph

City MPG: Approx. 13-15MPG
Highway MPG: Approx. 25-30MPG.
Fuel Used: 89 Octane, 7% Ethanol; The cheap stuff. Premium every 10th tank or so.
Average highway speed: 110k/h (Roughly 70MPH)
Average Climate: -20 to -30C in winter, 25 to 35C in summer.
Mechanical Mods: Nothing (Edit: Just remembered. High-volume fuel pump installed when the original died. Don't know anything more specific than that, though)
Mileage on the Engine: 210,000KM
Comments: I drive my bird very nicely. I don't think I've ever put the pedal farther than a quarter of the way down (And even that is rare), and I could probably count on my fingers the number of times anybody has floored it (And only ever at highway speeds to pass somebody). The car has also always been driven in drive, not overdrive, unless on the highway (Both by me and the original owner). Fuel economy and performance both seem to improve in colder temperatures, and it especially loves cold, rainy days - Everybody else I've asked says the opposite about their cars (Fuel economy and performance decrease noticably in the cold). Fuel injector cleaner was used probably every 3rd tank of gas or so. Probably on the third set of spark plugs in the car's life, and it's never been in the shop for anything besides oil changes and a fuel pump replacement. Also, for the record, the car apparently gets 40MPG at ~90MPH, in overdrive with the A/C on full, but I haven't verified this myself.

City MPG: Live out in the country. I average 26 back and forth to work.
Highway MPG: Round trip from Central Iowa to northern Iowa to Omaha and back averaged 29.2 on two tanks
Fuel Used: 89 Octane, Corn gas is subsidized here.
Average highway speed: 70MPH
Average Climate: For this trip, 70's. Year round, everything from -15 to 105
Mechanical Mods: Removed air silencer, Denso Iridium plugs and 8.8mm wires about 100,000 miles ago.
Mileage on the Engine: 241,000 miles and counting
Comments: My trans is slipping a little. When I pass someone the revs will get up to 4000 and it will slam into gear. Maybe this is why the MPGs have gone down since October of last year.

Comments: I paid $500 for the car in '06 and got a total of about $1500 in her now, not counting the Cobra rims and Potenza tires, I had those another 'Bird.

Comments:
- It actually seems to do about that same with ethanol free, but I usually try to avoid ethanol anyway.
- This PA to SC trip was with a lot of weight in the car. I like to laugh at my mom's 2009 Toyota Camry that couldn't pull this mileage when loaded with luggage like my 1993 T-Bird was today and last month.

AC mpg Reduction

As I have not been able to test it very well myself to this point, I am curious if you anyone has noticed how much the AC reduces fuel economy at highway speeds. Several studies have shown the windows down works better up to certain speeds, whereas the engine has enough spare power at high speeds to make the AC drag fairly negligible. This is all based on how aerodynamic the vehicle is to begin with, of course.

I got my 29 MPG on the highway with windows down and the AC off. As this only really works when it's just me in the car (I don't personally mind the heat with wind blowing on me, but passenger comfort is an issue). I notice a decrease in perceived power with the AC on, I just don't know how much of a difference it really makes, as I haven't gone on any lengthy highway trips with the AC on.

So does anyone have a good estimate themselves about how much AC would decrease my fuel economy on the highway?

As that's the 4.6 L (from your profile), I'm not sure how much that applies, but it certainly is food for thought. One would think that would be less efficient given the eco rating, which then confuses me on some levels. Perhaps that could show how inaccurate their measurements are, which is obvious anyway given that I've easily gotten over the rating in mine several times with straight highway driving.

Regardless, If anyone has any experience on this with the 3.8 engine, I'd be curious. If not, thanks master.
