I've never had to do anything where putting a hole in the firewall was needed, but now(soon) I need to get a couple of 4ga power wires through the firewall and into my trunk.

Are there any existing holes I could use, or what would be the best place and best way to get through the firewall with a minimal of complications?

I seen that before, it's pretty vague and I also don't want the wires showing, other than in the engine bay. It looks as if that just comes right out and then gets tucked back in again.

Where exactly is that grommet located? how accessible is it, is it going to be a huge pain to run 2x4AWG wires there?

I put my wire through the steering column boot, just used a screwdriver to poke a hole. Been 1 year with no problems.:)

Also heard there is a hole behind the glove box you can use. ( I couldn't find it) Or go through the door like the above link.

I've drilled a hole on my 94 bird and 92 cougars. When we installed a system in my 97 LSC, we used the grommet up by the LF fender/door area. Worked great and didnt involve any super long drill bits. If I knew any better back then I wouldve ran it through the grommet. I have a single 4 ga to my battery in the trunk.

through the LF fender is good, but where exactly is this grommet located? where am I looking to find it?

I might just cave and buy a couple of these but it then becomes a question of how hard is it to get a drill somewhere to make the holes, and then how hard is it to get the wire from behind the dash in the spot that I drilled the holes.

you dont need a super long bit. i used a regular drill and a standard bit (whatever size you need). once you drill through (firewall is maybe 1/8"), use a "fish" wire (coat-hanger or similar) to locate it inside. insert grommet, pull wire.

this is not a hard process. and you can probably find a cheaper grommet than Monster. they are overpriced.

Do not buy those from Monster. IF you get a strain relief just get one form HomeDepot/Lowes or an Electrical supply store.

If you go that route and you get a metal strain relief which is what I would suggest then you will all so need lock rings and bushings, and if rust is an issue where you are will need to repaint the area where the lock ring goes.

Strain reliefs are a much better option but they are way over kill in the application. Unless you want to get a NEMA 12 rating or need to be CSA approved.

you might even be able to go to AZ and look through the PCV grommets and find one that will work.

^^metal strain relief?

yall want an easy grommet that you probably have laying around.

Get some heater hose or fuel line(basically rubber hose), thats a tad bigger than whatever size wire you're running, and slide it over the wire where it makes its penatration through the firewall.

cheap, easy, simple.

AKA Box Connector. Very common electrical item usually only used on SO cable or Festoon Cable.

IIRC, its above the upper door hinge, maybe to the front of it? It's been a while, but its just a rubber body plug, cut a hole in it and feed it through, then silicone the hell out of it just for fun :) Thats what we did on the lsc. It wasnt too hard to reach up through the LH kick panel "hole" to help feed the wire through.

Since i'm the OP of the first link.. if one cared to follow/read the whole post.. and look for the `links' to the other pictures.. one would very easily see where the wire comes out, where this `grommet' is, and so forth..

Can one fit two 4ga wires through that way, NO.. a 2ga may be pushing it.. But this way you'll be hard off to see the wire, even if you crawl under the dash.. And under the hood, you may never see it, depending on where you place the Fuse holder and how you run the wire from the Battery to it..

Mind you the same basic route can be altered a little to allow larger size wire through or more then one 4ga..

You left out, "Seal with RTV".

Water will wick thru if it's not sealed, giving you that "Is my heater core going bad?" smell... :)

I still have no idea where this hole is.

Is it the hole thats plugged just under the brake booster on the fender well a little bit? I see some holes with some wool like material around that area so is that the right hole?

I'd just use the steering column boot. That's what I did, no problems yet. It's free, you're not putting holes in metal that could rust, at least that is my reason why I get nervous about drilling holes in the firewall. And if you want to undo it, you can just get some superglue or other adhesive and seal the hole in the boot back up.

In his defense I tried looking for a hole and could not easily find it and did not get any help as to where the hole is. If someone has found this hole and could give a little direction as to where it is it would be much more helpful than just making fun of someone.
