Had a B&M shift kit installed (street strip) and was hoping that would give a shift on command option. (No more about JMod, didn't know when it was done). Anyway if I shift from 1 to 2 manually it stills winds out then shift somewhere about 4k. I was told to down shift from drive to second. This does shift on command with a healthy chirp of the tires. My question is whether doing this occasionally is OK for trans? Thanks . Yes I did search before posting this question..

I would let it shift automatically on a "drag race" type run from zero. The factory tune programs the shifts early, then the accumulator has to fill with fluid, then the shift happens. This is the delay you are seeing when you command the upshift manually. No way around it.

Locking it in 2nd is the only reliable (performance wise) thing you can do. This is perfect for your mountain driving as you can go as high as 75-80, or as low as 0, though 20-25 is as low as it will still pull decently in 2nd. Just leave it in 2nd for spirited driving in the mountains, as I think you already do.

If you go from drive to 2nd at speed, be sure to unlock OD so it will downshift one gear at a time.

Only way to reliably choose your own gears is with a manual trans, or a full manual valve body.

OK, thanks guys. I was down at the beach this past weekend and going through a tunnel there some folks were having a bit of fun with the echo from their cars in the tunnel. So I ran mine up to about 3k and pulled it back to second and got a healthy chirp from the tires. But that isn't my normal driving style. Al hit it on the nose, I lock it in second and run around the mountains here in Virginia.
But I've got to admit it was nice to get the ol' girl to bark once.
