Got my new front end parts from Ford today! I'm glad I paid the extra money for OEM. The strut rod bushings at the control arm are bad so I went ahead and ordered a lower control arm and bushings for both ends of the strut rod while I have it out. It cost a ton but well worth it! The strut rod at the K member bushing kit has everything in it, I was surprised. The passenger side is bad, but in a couple of weeks, when I have the money, I'm getting the same for the drivers side. Can't wait to get them in!

Yea, FUN is definitely the first word that comes to mind...
I just replaced the same things plus inner and outer tie rod ends on my friends 97 Cougar. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I soaked the "strut" assembly bolt and bushing ferrels with power blaster lube for a few days and they came right out. I'm hoping it's that easy with mine :)

My lower shock bolt wasn't a big problem, but the ferrules needed to be removed the hard way! :zbash:

I'm dealing with the ferrules right now. What's the best way to get them out? The two parts are clearly rusted together. Right now I soaked 'em in penetrating fluid and I'll try hammering at them again. Can I use a dremel and try to cut the ferrules our or what? Just keep beating on them?

At the front washer, I pried the end of it to slide the front washer off. I didn't hack it just in case I might need it.

Thx, Rodeo, I'll try from the other side...

So how do you get the bushing off the LCA side of the strut rod? Mine's on there real good! More penetrating fluid? See pic... the strut rod is off the car now by the way.

Boy am I glad I live in the dry southwest. The bottom of my car looks like new and the front end rebuild went like replacing parts on a new car. Yes, I'm spoiled.

Rodeo, that tip was great. I was able to pry the big front washer off. I'm starting to put the first side back together now. Just about done, I just need to change the UCA and drop the car down to torque some of the bolts up when the suspension has weight on it. I know the tricks now and can do the other side much quicker...

Coat all those metal parts in anti-sieze before you put them back together; You'll be taking them apart again later. (5 years or so...)

I forgot to mention I used my pickle fork to get that stubborn rusted piece of garbage bushing off.

Grog6, why would I be taking them apart in 5 years? The first stuff lasted about 15 years.

IMHO if your taking it apart in 5 years, you did it wrong. Granted, this only applies if using good parts. If you use crap parts, you get to do crap work over and over again.

I'm only using Ford OEM or Motorcraft parts. Well, except for the Monroe QuickShocks. All bushings, control arms, tie-rod ends, etc are Ford/Motorcraft. Top notch quality stuff. I like to do things right the first time LOL

most of my front suspension is Moog,i just purchased my UCA's,Dorman OE solutions,was the brand, the ball joints themselves are huge compared to the current ones on the car nice upgrade if u ask me.my lower arms and strut rod bushings are moog also,my mech torched the washer off for the strut rods,they came right off.i just changed out the rack yesterday man,that was alot of fun,but my steering is smooth as silk :D goodluck on your build.

As long as you are using Motorcraft from Ford, you will get another 15 years out of it.
(Well, Grandma would get another 15. We will probably get 10, lol.)

Motorcraft not from ford is made to slightly lower standards; I still use MC from Rockauto. The MC parts also have teflon lined sockets, which make a huge difference in how they feel. (Duffy from SCCOA informed us on the differences awhile back.)

Get Koni shocks next time; you'll thank me. :)

If you buy suspension parts from Ebay, you get what you pay for; recycled Chinese scrap. :D
