It happens, if it has an aluminum intake it is a 95, if the intake is plastic possibly with an aluminum crossover it is a 96. That only applies to 4.6 cars however.
I can't think of an easy way to tell you to identify it on a 3.8 car but their are very distinct body differences. A 96 shoudl have clear looking headlights and the 95's do not.

Check out the VIN. If the 10th digit is "S", it's 95. If it's "T", it's 96. Of course there's the obvious styling cues as well; if the rear trunk lights have a black strip at the bottom they're pre-96. Of course that's assuming the car is stock.

He could have bought it in 96 so he's misinformed as to the model year of the car he bought.
I'd go by the VIN as well.

Oh it's a 96 for sure. His title says it's a 95. Just odd.
Where is the "6" and "5" on the keyboard?

Easy enough to explain as a tpyo.
