Hi Folks,
New guy here... I joined this board in hopes of getting some info on the T-Bird/Cougar/Mark VII IRS systems. I build custom rolling chassis for restomods and older pick ups. I am big on harvesting suspension systems from later model vehicles. I have a possible application for the above mentioned IRS's. I saw one place online where a guy used the complete T-Bird IRS in a custom chassis for a'53-'56 Ford F-100. I would be very interested in hearing from anybody who has done any of this kind of work.

There is a guy local to me building a truck like that...using thunderbird SC drivetrain and all...

Although my initial reason for posting these questions was to find a good production IRS that could be harvested from junk yards, I am now thinking that since the set up from the Mark is too wide, I might consider using it in my chassis I am building for one of my '53s. I am using a '99 Explorer rolling chassis but I don't care too much for the standard rear suspension. The other '53 is going to have a totally custom built chassis using the drive train from a '97 electronic all wheel drive Aerostar. Both these vehicles have 8.8" diffs so it would be easy enough to swap out the gears from my straight 8.8's.

It may well be that depending on finding a good steady source of the T-Bird/Cougar IRS set ups for the custom hot rod chassis is not a good idea in that they are highly sought for many different kind of projects including Triking Harleys and Goldwings. That might have to wait until people start wadding up MKS's and Taurus's.

It's not that hard or expensive to narrow a tbird irs.

I have my rear set aside and plan to slip it in my 99 Trans Am.

When I break up the SC and get that bad boy out I will get a chance to see what has to be done. The one I have is not going to need to be narrowed because it is for a project that does not need it. However, after I get it out where I can look at it I'm sure that if it can be done reasonably and neatly as well as maintain it's structural integrity. If it can be done and duplicated with reasonable efficiency I think it would be a very good alternative to the high dollar aftermarket set ups.

Nice work... This looks slightly familiar... Have you had this posted on the FTE? I'm not that familial with the '48 to '52 frame so I can't tell for sure by looking at the picture, but is that a stock frame you started with? It looks as though you have boxed the entire frame and did away with all the stock cross members. Also, is that the T-Bird front suspension?

I saw your age and location ... It's nice to know I'm not the only geezer doing stuff like this. I go by your area quite a lot on my trips to see my son down by Atlanta. I'd like to see your truck sometime when you get it finished.

That is the stock frame and we did replace all the cross members and boxed the frame. We made the towers for the coil over shocks and upper control arms by copying the angles from the T-bird body. The frame is very ridgid like you need with the suspension. We used the K member from the Bird giving us all the brakes and power steering and engine mounting . Me and my son did all the work and made all the parts. Ain't nutin old geezers can't do, Right? It is on FTE forum. Larry.
