I know 98% of all technical information for cars can be found online these days, but sometimes it takes a rather large amount of digging to find specifics. For that reason I am looking to purchase a repair manual. I notice there are 2 brands, Haynes, and Chilton. Now the Haynes covers 1989-1997 and the Chilton covers 1983-1997. I am posting here to see if anyone has any experience with these manuals, and to see if they are both basically the same thing or if one is better than the other.

Neither one does well as toilet paper, and neither one has wiring diagrams worth using as toilet paper.

The rest tends to be quite generic.

For the manual, why not pick up the Ford Factory Service Manual? They're available on Ebay as paper and sometimes CD/DVD; and sometimes Helm ( Service Manuals, Owner Manuals, Wiring Diagrams, Service Bulletins - Helm Incorporated ) will have them at a reasonable price.

What year are you looking for, specifically?

Ford factory service manual, and EVTM. Hands down, best information you will ever find for your vehicle.

I do have a couple extra Chiltons and Haynes manuals also. I tend to find them useful only for their consolidated wiring diagrams when I am doing comparison work for re-wiring jobs.

If you have access to Windows XP environment (Virtual PC works too) or older, the Ford Service Manual CDs are an option--these are not just PDF scans.

I use my Ford Service Manual way more often than my Chiltons book. Many years ago got a package deal on ebay for the 1995 Thunderbird, Cougar-XR7 Service Manual and Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual. There are several on ebay now (not mine) at a good price. Shipping should be cheap - Media Mail.

I have the mn12 performance factory manual CD if you want me to email the files. I think the Chilton manuals are worthless, they have decreased the value of the paper they are printed on. I have tried with multiple vehicles, to use them as an actual guide to troubleshoot, and every time they have failed miserably. Autozone has a way to pull up factory wiring diagrams that work well, I just used one to troubleshoot headlights inop on a 03 F350 just the other day.

I have both, they give some info, buy listen to the other guys.

Those manuals leave most of the real information out.
