How many of you have done this and what (in ballpark figuring) did it run you cost wise, and time wise??

Just pondering,

I've done 3 of them on 4.6's

and let me tell you I gave up and took the engine OUT. The drivers side is doable if you remove all the brake stuff, battery tray fuse box and take off the hood, forget the passenger side there's not enough room to lift the head off. The biggest issue is not cleaning the surface or positioning the gasket it's not killing it putting the 60 pound head back on the block and bolting it down.
Trust me it's just easier to have a dealership do it if you have the $$$
($1430 plus 2 days down time)
Never done a V6 or SC that will be later this month I'm sure if Frydaddy keeps at it like he has been.

Fuse box?? ..and all the brake stuff?!?

Dude, what the heck are you talking bout? All you have to do is prop some of the head bolts up with rubber bands and the heads will come right off. You don't need to remove the fuse box or master cyl. Taking your car to the dealer unless Big Blue is paying for it is not smart.

Why would you not clean the surface(s)? If you need help lowering the head down have a friend help you. Don't chance marring the surface of the block or head or damaging the gasket for that matter.

Well I don't know for sure ha I am going do right now. money will kind of dictate what happens. I would really like to get a hold of a bullit crate but then there's that money thing again lol.

I tell ya what you come over to my shop...

and tell the passenger side head on MN-12 #4 that it needs to just have the head bolts "propped up by rubberbands" and see what happens. Thats right NOTHING.
I've tried every suggestion anybody has come up with including the rubberband one.
There just ain't room now if the AC compressor and associated lines wern't there maybe (and thats a BIG maybe) the head could be slid foreward like the drivers side one.
And I'm sorry I wasn't clear in what I typed.
What I meant for you to read was it is not a problem of getting the gasket off and cleaned off the block & head. The problem is not messing up the NEW gasket when you put the head back down on it and slid it around trying to get it lined up just right.

Been there, done it, and wrote the book on it. You are not doing it correctly. Feel free to tow it to my shop and I will school you on how it's done. I'm sure Others here will concur that you can remove a passenger side head on a MN12 without removing the motor. A 4V head might be another story tho.
The dowels in the block are there to hold the gasket and help install the head.

u wanted a ballpark figure? i just talk to my shop cause i blew both head gaskets......$1300-1500. i am screwed!!!!
