my cruise control has never worked in my 95 4.6 t-bird anyone have any ideas

i've checked the fuse and vaccum lines even changed the buttons on the steering wheel is there a relay?:confused:

Maybe the buttons don't work. I'll get back to you in a little while with more info if someone else hasn't answered.

Edit: Ok, a non-functioning cruise control system could be caused by several things. Like I said it's possible the buttons don't work, or it's a fuse, or the contact plate for the steering wheel might be screwed up or not making contact where it needs to. Wiring from the switch to the servo might be a problem, or the servo itself might be the problem. That's about it. Troubleshooting is very involved. Just check the fuses first.

Here's the troubleshooting steps:

<a name="A1">«A1»</a> - VERIFY POWER TO SPEED CONTROL SERVO
1) Disconnect 14290 harness connector from speed control servo.
2) Turn ignition switch to RUN.
3) With a Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter 105-R0051 or equivalent, measure voltage between speed control servo connector Pin 7, Circuit 296 (W/P) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - GO to <a href="#A4">«A4»</a>.
No - GO to <a href="#A2">«A2»</a>.

<a name="a2">«A2»</a> - CHECK IGNITION CIRCUIT
1) With ignition switch in RUN, measure voltage between speed control servo connector Pin 7, Circuit 296 (W/P) and a ground on the chassis.

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a3">«A3»</a>.

No - SERVICE SP CNTRL/HEGO (10A) in power distribution box or Circuit 296 (W/P) as required.

<a name="a3">«A3»</a> - CHECK SPEED CONTROL SERVO GROUND CIRCUIT
1) Measure resistance between speed control servo Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK) and a ground point on the chassis.

Is resistance less than one ohm?

Yes - REPEAT Step <a href="#a1">«A1»</a>.

No - SERVICE ground Circuit 57 (BK). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="A4">«A4»</a> - CHECK DEACTIVATOR SWITCH CIRCUIT
1) Leave ignition switch in RUN.
2) With no brakes applied, place a 12 volt circuit test light between speed control servo connector Pin 9, Circuit 636 (O) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is the light illuminated?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a7">«A7»</a>.

No - GO to <a href="#a5">«A5»</a>.

<a name="a5">«A5»</a> - VERIFY POWER AT DEACTIVATOR SWITCH HARNESS CONNECTOR
1) Remove harness connector from deactivator switch.
2) Place 12 volt circuit test light between Circuit 10 (LG/R) of deactivator switch connector and chassis ground.

Is the light illuminated?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a6">«A6»</a>.

No - SERVICE blown fuse 11 (15A) or open Circuit 10 (LG/R). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a6">«A6»</a> - CHECK FOR OPEN CIRCUIT BETWEEN DEACTIVATOR SWITCH AND SPEED CONTROL SERVO
1) Measure resistance of Circuit 636 (O) from deactivator switch connector to Pin 9 of speed control servo connector.
2) Is resistance less than one ohm?

Yes - REPLACE deactivator switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

No - SERVICE open Circuit 636 (0) in harness. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a7">«A7»</a>- CHECK STOPLIGHT SWITCH SUPPLY
1) With no brakes applied, measure voltage between speed control servo connector Pin 4, Circuit 511 (LG) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - REPLACE stoplight switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

No - GO to <a href="#a8">«A8»</a>.

<a name="a8">«A8»</a> - CHECK STOPLIGHT SWITCH CIRCUITRY
1) With brakes applied, measure voltage between speed control servo connector Pin 4, Circuit 511 (LG) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a12">«A12»</a>.

No - GO to <a href="#a9">«A9»</a>.

<a name="a9">«A9»</a> - CHECK STOPLIGHT SWITCH RESISTANCE
1) Remove electrical connector from stoplight switch.
2) Measure resistance between two terminals of stoplight switch with brakes applied.

Is resistance less than five ohms?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a10">«A10»</a>.

No - REPLACE stoplight switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a10">«A10»</a> - VERIFY POWER AT STOPLIGHT SWITCH HARNESS CONNECTOR
1) Measure voltage between Circuit 10 (LG/R) of stoplight switch connector and chassis ground.

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a11">«A11»</a>.

No - SERVICE blown fuse 11 (15A) or open in Circuit 10 (LG/R). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a11">«A11»</a> - CHECK FOR OPEN CIRCUIT BETWEEN STOPLIGHT SWITCH AND SPEED CONTROL SERVO
1) Measure resistance of Circuit 511 (LG) from stoplight switch connector to Pin 4 of speed control servo connector.

Is resistance less than five ohms?

Yes - REPEAT Step <a href="#a7">«A7»</a>.

No - SERVICE open in Circuit 511 (LG). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a12">«A12»</a> - CHECK FOR STUCK ON SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR SWITCH ASSEMBLY
1) With no steering wheel switches pressed, measure voltage between speed control servo connector Pin 5, Circuit 151 (LB/BK) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - REPLACE speed control actuator switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

No - GO to <a href="#a13">«A13»</a>.

<a name="a13">«A13»</a> - CHECK ON SWITCH OPERATION
1) With steering wheel ON switch pressed, measure voltage between speed control servo connector Pin 5, Circuit 151 (LB/BK) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a17">«A17»</a>.

No - GO to <a href="#a14">«A14»</a>.

<a name="a14">«A14»</a> - VERIFY POWER AT AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT CONNECTOR AT BASE OF STEERING COLUMN
1) Disconnect air bag sliding contact at the base of steering column.
2) Measure voltage between Circuit 6 (Y/LG) at air bag sliding contact connector and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK) of speed control servo connector.

Is there battery voltage?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a15">«A15»</a>.

No - CHECK HORN/DRL fuse in the power distribution box, Circuit 460 (Y/LB), horn relay and Circuit 6 (Y/LG). SERVICE as necessary. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a15">«A15»</a> - CHECK AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT
1) Disconnect speed control actuator switch.
2) Measure resistance across each of the air bag sliding contact windings between the air bag sliding contact connector at the base of steering column and speed control switches connector in steering wheel.

Is each resistance reading between 0.25-0.5 ohm?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a16">«A16»</a>.

No - REPLACE air bag sliding contact. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a16">«A16»</a> - CHECK FOR OPEN CIRCUIT BETWEEN AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT AND SPEED CONTROL SERVO
1) Measure resistance in Circuits 151 (LB/BK) and 848 (DG/O) between air bag sliding contact connector at base of steering column and speed control servo.

Is each resistance reading less than five ohms?

Yes - REPLACE speed control actuator switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

No - SERVICE open in Circuit 151 (LB/BK) or Circuit 848 (DG/O). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a17">«A17»</a> - CHECK FOR STUCK COMMAND SWITCHES
1) With no steering wheel switches pressed, measure resistance between speed control servo connector Pin 5, Circuit 151 (LB/BK) and Pin 6, Circuit 848 (DG/O).

Is resistance greater than 3k ohms?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a18">«A18»</a>.

No - REPLACE speed control actuator switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a18">«A18»</a> - CHECK SET/ACCEL SWITCH OPERATION
1) With the SET/ACCEL switch pressed, measure resistance between speed control servo connector Pin 5, Circuit 151 (LB/BK) and Pin 6, Circuit 848 (DG/O).

Is resistance between 646 and 714 ohms?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a19">«A19»</a>.

No - REPLACE speed control actuator switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

<a name="a19">«A19»</a> - CHECK VSS CIRCUIT
1) Measure resistance between speed control servo connector Pin 3, Circuit 679 (GY/BK) and Pin 10, Circuit 57 (BK).

Is resistance between 200 and 300 ohms?

Yes - GO to <a href="#a21">«A21»</a>.

No - GO to <a href="#a20">«A20»</a>.

<hr>

<a name="a20">«A20»</a> - CHECK VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)
1) Remove VSS connector.
2) Measure resistance across VSS terminals.

Is resistance between 200 and 300 ohms?

Yes - CHECK for opens or shorts in Circuit 679 (GY/BK), 676 (PK/O) or 359 (GY/R). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

No - REPLACE vehicle speed sensor.

<a name="a21">«A21»</a> - CHECK FOR BROKEN OR BINDING CABLE
1) Remove speed control cable from speed control servo.
2) Check for broken or binding cable by pulling on cable ball slug to ensure throttle moves freely.

Is cable OK?

Yes - REPLACE speed control servo. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

No - REPLACE speed control cable. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
