i mentioned this in this thread, and have since decided to at least attempt to take some action against the domain squatters.

the first step on my list is to assemble a list of "signatures" on a petition of people supporting the idea that Ford enthusiasts like ourselves should be in control of the domain mn12.com, NOT some pornographic domain squatter.

after contacting the registrar, he informed me i could purchase the domain from him for $300. this, to me, is unacceptable.

SO - please visit http://mn12.net/petition to add your name to the list of people who want OUR domain back!

mn12.com should have educational information and pretty pictures, NOT a huge list of links to porn sites.

thanks for your support,
-ian

You think that guy cares about a petition? The only reason he bought the domain was because you searched for it, these peopel somehow find out the names people are searching for, he buys it hoping that you will want to buy it from him, and then he makes a profit selling it at a higher price then he bought it for. Don't give in by paying him $300 whatever you do.

Check with legitimate Domain registars. I think what the porn guy did was illegal, even under international law and treaty. I think you can raise enough problems for this guy. Oh, I also think he's off US Shore by him specifying $USD.

Its completely legal, and the Domain registars wouldn't care if it wasn't.

Actually, there is a law against domain-squatting somewhere. There was a case like this a year or two ago regarding v6power.com, where it was registered by a squatter before the co-owner of the real site could re-register. Nothing ever came of it really...

NRL: no, i don't think that guy cares about a petition, but should i pursue legal action, it can't hurt to have a whole bunch of other people supporting what i'm trying to do, rather than it just being one person's opinion.

i know there is nothing illegal about registering a domain, but if you can prove you have more of a "right" to the name than the registrar, you CAN win. just look at the people that snaked the product name from NetSaint

and hell, worst case scenario, i'll have a bake sale to raise an amount of money as a counter offer to buy it. i know it's not a huge deal, but the principle of the thing just really irritates me, so i'll expend some energy fighting for the cause :]

not necessarily.. anyone remember the famous nissan.com law suit? the owner of the site, Uzi Nissan, registered the domain many years ago for his computer company.. nissan motors wanted the domain, so they sued him. in the end, it all came down to big company with lots of money to blow vs. small town guy.

read up on it here: http://www.ncchelp.org/The_Story/the_story.htm

edit: now granted this porn directory isn't a corporate giant, and this is a different scenario than the nissan.com instance, but i'm just saying that the statement you made above is false.. this mn12.com issue is soemthing totally different.

8ate8: i understand your point, but i didn't necessarily mean i WILL win, just that it IS possible that i COULD win.

i'm not getting my hopes up on the legal end of it though ... i might just see if i can counter offer his $300 cost.

through a few "negotiation" sessions with the current registered owner of mn12.com, i think i have been able to get him to reduce his asking price for transfer of the domain name.

IF you see fit to help me take mn12.com out of the hands of pornographic domain squatters, prety please visit - http://mn12.net/petition and click the "save mn12.com!" button on the right to offer your donation to the cause!

no donation to small, no donation too large. ALL help is greatly appreciated.

peace,
