My cougar started amking this godawful loud popping or knocking noise heading towards owensboro today, it started kinda queit and then it got really really loud. and it would match speed with my engine. any ideas?? i really dont wanna have to replace the engine or anything like that, but any and all help is appreciated.

and what would caus emy to have a huigher than normal idle., like on cold days wheni start it up it will hover aroun 2400 and normal days it will sit around 1600 in neutral.

it has something to do with valves, rocker arms, and pushrods. my car does this too. listen and watch for other problems, mainly your oil, to avoid more work. i change oil every 2000 miles because the burnt gas isn't expelled as efficiently which is why you're noticing high rpms. look into idle air control units ($50) and then your headgaskets if overheating. the overheating is caused by a faulty fan motor ($100).

Bad news everyone. i threw a rod. gotta repalce the engine.

anyone know where i cna find all the parts for a 5.0 swap fairly cheap? (cheape than the shops estimate fora new 3.8 (1750)

i just got this car to.. this is really starting to get old. why cant they make somethign that will run forever, like volvo or soemthing. hehe anyway, lemme know something

89-93 n/a v6's and v8's had belt driven fans. 89-90 cougar xr7's and 89-95 sc's had the electric fans, as did the 94+ t'bird/cougar v6 and the v8's.

that sucks, have you thought about gettin a later model v6 and swapping it in?

how would a later year 3.8 be any more powerful than the turd that just ate itself??

if i can do the whole swap and possible rebuild to get the 5.0 like new, for around 2600 installed then im gonna do it, but if i cant then i will prolly just pick ua crate 3.8 and call it done, although the engine in my new car (new to me and only 118 on the clock) killin itself really pisses me off and depresses the hell out of me. i was a neat freak on this thing. it was spotless inside and out, well except for the floormats, but they were aftermarket rubber ones anyway, the stock ones are in greatshape. but still, ive had the car fora few weeks and this happens. man it freaking sucks something fierce

do a splitport swap outta a 99 up mustang if you want a little more power and call it done, the later model 3.8's don't have as many probs as the early ones, or just use the heads and intake off you current engine on a later model block, you won't get a boost in power but the reliability will be better,

but it's your car and it's your decision to make. just giving you easier options then doing a 5.0 swap and have to rewire the car if you want to stay with the fuel injection, or just stick a junkyard motor into it and sell it and get you a 5.0 car if that's what you want.

with $2600, you can easily do a 5.0 swap. a modded 5.0 swap even, provided you do the work yourself. factor in some shop work to prep the block for assembly. i can provide some guidance if you choose to go 5.0. i have been doing my research. i know where to find parts and how much they cost.

a later model 3.8 doesnt have many problems like our 3.8s. they utilize different heads and intakes. the 5.0 has a huge aftermarket, so there is potential for your coug.
