I did the hoopdy ram air mod from http://www.shadoweb.net/tbird/alscoop.html. I still have the stock air filter and what a difference. Adjusting it to point the right way was the hardest part because it was a tight fit to put together so i had to keep pulling it outa the car and turning it little by little till it was right. Including the air silencer removal a week earlier it was mayb a 1 hour and 30 min job. Very easy. This was the first mod i have ever done on any car too. (I do have expierience wit small rc methane engines though). Before the mod with a broken 1-2 spring (neck breaking shifts) it wouldn't even break the tires loose on the shift. I got the tranny fixed and it still wouldn't do it. (no supprise since it shifts like a granny now). Did the mod, and now it will break them loose easily with the stock filter. I cant wait till i get a K&n. It really didn't help at all until about 35. It does pretty much nothing at low rpms because the engine doesn't really need all the air its getting. At about 3500 rpms it really starts pulling though. At about 40 if u stomp it, when it downshifts it will REALLY pull. Would really help for passing on a 2 lane. Also, after you do the mod and haven't reset the compu, it will run like crap. I could harldy get it to rev past 3500 in park. I moved it into my garage, unhooked the bat for 30 mins and took her for a reset spin. Although I accidently left it in second for 5 mins and was wondering wtf i had done to my poor engine, after that it went well. (its hard ass hell to pull out of a intersection in second. I was stomping it too trying to get the compu to get new settings.) I suggest this mod to anyone. Well c what my air filter looks like tommorrow. Also, how bad is it to drive in rain? any chance of getting water in the engine? because I know thise will twist every because water dont compress.

If you did precisely what those pics show, you failed to do the most important part! You didn't actually remove the restriction that is the silencer!

If you look at the first pic on that page, you see 3 parts. The instructions there are wrong!!! You need to get rid of the MIDDLE PART. That's the restriction that's supposed to be removed!

If you still have that section in yours, get it out! It doesn't matter how, just get it out.

And as for driving in the rain, you would have to submerge the inlet to be a problem. Just drill a couple of 1/2" holes in the back side of the pipe going up and it'll never suck water into the engine. (unless you drive it into a river or lake)

Yeah I need to take new pics, the 4"-3" adapter will fit on the first part of the silencer if you pry it on with a screwdriver.

The one up there now is the "Big-Al Cold Air Scoop" and I soon realized the restrictive piece was making it pointless so got it on there without it.

Could you not call it "Hoopdy"???:p

Since you want to be picky it shouldn't be called "Ram Air" either.

Oh, of course. In the other thread where I posted the entire article it says at the end that this does not ram air, it only allows the car to draw cooler air.

I just didn't like it being refered to as hoopdy :D

Well it is.

Hoopdy - noun, adjective - car or description of a ghetto car.

Ghetto - noun - that which is not highly cultured or regarded is said to be ghetto. Anything not pop culture can also be said as ghetto. This is not necessarily an insult, but is most often miscontrued as one

Whaaaa?

I tell you what, you can design your own and paint yellow stipes on it and slap a R sticker on it while your at it and call it rice for all I care. But until then, while I am not trying to put a patten on the cold air scoop, I would prefer that the ones made from the instructions I wrote not to be refered to as hoopdy which commonly describes a large 4-door sedan from the 80s! :D

lol i most certainly did remove the one piece. Is it neccesarry to drill some holes or is it fine as is? To me anything called hoopdy is something that doesn't work/something that is cheap/something i was too cheap to pay full price for.

How much water do you drive through? I haven't had much of a problem with water, though it does pick up a lot of sand.. lol

My dad drives the car right now. He drives it to and from work (30 mins each way) everday. It rains maybe once or twice a week in STL. When i took out the panel filter the first time I had a bunch of sand sitting in the bottom of the air box too. WITH THE AIR SILENCER.

Worst thing I found in the airbox was glass from when my foglamps somehow got broken. I suppose it does actually pull air through there if the little bits of saftey glass made it all the way through those angles.

Hummm...?

I just get a messed up "Page not Found" that starts crying????

 ??WHO KNOWS??
ROFL, I take it you found the custom 404, it goes on for about 11 minutes.

http://www.shadoweb.net/tbird/alscoop.html

The extra period probably threw it off.

If you plan on doing this, remember though, until I get the pics of my modified version of the setup, don't use the extremely restrictive piece.. if you take the clamp all the way off the 3" end it makes it easier to get on. Then just put the clamp back on (but don't tighten until you have it aimed correctly)

even without the clamp on it was very hard to adjust mine. I had to tug and pull on it just to get it to turn a inch or so. Also, I had to keep pulling it from the car and turning then back in. It took like 5 times b4 it was right.

Well

I guess I should also mention that I do not have a stock air box, I have an 8" conicle filter enclosed with a custom plexiglass box that seals it off from the engine heat. So I have that plexi glass box that is fed by the "cold air intake" at the bottom. Hense my filter does not get as dirty as those with panel filters. I have the conicle filter with the inverted cone at the tip and it works very well with very little restriction

None of the T-Bird pics work. And on the blades, the shortsword, when you click on it, says, "Swortsword". Just so you know. :D
