Just wondering how you tell if you have ABS or not.

The first thing that comes to my mind is to drive at about 35-40 mph and then slam on your brakes, if your brakes lock up then you dont have abs and if your brakes pulsate a little bit then you do have abs.

I havent seen the car in 2 days so I would imagine the engine,tranny and rear are out of it by now.I am getting ready to put a 5.0HO 5-speed in it.

look at the rotors. On some cars that i have encountered with abs have something like a ring around the front or back (ussally back) that have notches in it. Then theres like a sensor hovering over that were the abs system plugs in. The notches pass the sensor and tell how fast the wheels are going.... ok... steering away from the how do you tell subject. Anyways... thats all i could think of for now. Hope it helps.

There should be an ABS computer in the tray under the back deck in the trunk.

<i>Edit: That is not where the ABS computer is located on the '94 + MN12s.</i>

Edit. Thanks JT. My apologies. Where is it on the 94?

<i>Edit: You can loosen the front side of the front driver side inner splash shield. You'll see it just behind the front bumper. Next to that will be the ABS pump relay.</i>

less dangerous approach

Not quite as much fun but look for an orange ABS light when u crank the car. It should come on for a couple seconds while the ABS computer checks itself (unless the light has been removed, like in my car). Also look for an ABS relay and fuse in the power distribution box under the hood

Disc or Drum rear brakes....

If you have drums on the rear, you don't have ABS, if you have discs on the rear, you might. Then do what Rob and Jeremiah said.

You can also just drive it up past 14 mph, and then see if you can hear the ABS pump
activate for about a second or so. I can hear mine fine with all the windows rolled up.

abs wont really decrease stopping distances all that much (unless its wet/slick). instead, its major benefit is that it allows you to stear and slow down quickly at the same time (and you dont get flat spots on your tires lol). if you dont have abs and are sliding, ease up on the brakes a little then "pedal" it, keeping as much pressure on untill till they are just shy of locking up. you will actually stop faster... this is exactly what the abs is trying to accomplish only it does a better job.
J-Rob, did your abs near death experience involve just the anitlock not working or complete brake failure?

That would help,huh?lol I just went down to check on it today and it doesnt have ABS.I looked for the exciter rings and none were found.

I know you found out, but heres another test that can be possibly used: Hold the brake pedal down, start the car (still on the pedal), and then you should feel a thump under your foot (one of the selftest that ABS does)

i agree..and in driver's school they tell you to 'pump' the brakes in an emergency, and i know that's what you are supposed to do (on a non abs car)...but i know when i was almost in an accident (not my fault) that wasn't exactly the first thing on my mind...has anyone remembered to do this when braking extremely hard...or is it just me?

usually there's too much else running through your mind, but i have let up when i've had to steer while making sudden stops. i think it mostly applies at highway speeds since you're probably close to stopped during city driving when they do lock up. tires provide the most traction or friction right before they lock up but if you go beyond that, there is less. if the front tires arnt rolling or no traction, then the front end is gonna keep going straight. just turn the wheels and mash the brakes in the snow and you'll see. and if you've taken a corner too fast and the car is tight, sometimes more throttle is actually better... "steer" with the back wheels. its funny seeing friends grab for the oh sh*t handle that dosnt exist
