if someone contacting you regarding an ebay auction is legit. the following seems ok, but then i checked the prefix on the phone, and it comes back as nigeria. here you go:

Question about your item

Dear cseverens,

Hello, I just place a look on your item and i am intrested in immediate purcharse of this item, but before i proceed on this transaction i will like to ask some question as follow. 1.Do you accept a cashier check? 2.What is the final asking prize you can go at last? 3.Can we proceed off ebay if i can add $100 plus the buy it now?(there is a reason for that). Let me know if we can work things out and i can go ahead and raise the check .I will be awaiting your email soonest. Regards Dan.call me on(+234-8035616501).

Sounds a little weird, then again, I've gotten buyers that ask strange questions, and they turn out to be great buyers. The only thing that I can say is don't "proceed off of eBay" for your own safety. The reason he wants to do that, plus the $100, is perhaps he wants you to ship it to him, if he truely is in Nigeria, and is worried that if he buys it from you off of eBay is you won't do it. Just proceed carefully and stick by your guns. Your car will sell whether or not you sell it to this guy.

and they are listed as being in singapore. I'm sure if you give them you banking information they will
be sure to send you the money right away (haha) after they get done cleaning out
your account. I would send the email to eBay and let them deal with it.

yeah, i was just talking to ebay live help, and they said be suspicious. i didn't plan on selling offline unless it was local anyways. they said they will investigate the buyer and his intentions as soon as the chat was completed. i WAS excited that the car may sell, but i guess it was all for not.

Yeah, I think this is some sort of scam going on...

I recently got an offer from a guy in Europe for my datsun 210.

I've had my 210 for sale for about a month now and this guy writes me an email saying:

"Hello ,
I am Paul, Senior Manager for DAWSON MOTOR SALES Automobile,Ports
Corporation of Louhelantie 10B FI-01600 Vantaa, Finland.
We specialise in purchase of automobiles for customers in Europe, and
we get paid in commission, after payment has been confirmed by the
seller to the buyer.
At present we have a customer interested in purchasing your goods
mentioned above . Please kindly let me know your last price offer on this car as soon as possible so as to contact my client . Thanks .

Thanks,
Paul Dawson"

Then I wrote him back telling him the price, and wrote this back:

Hello ,
My Client asked me to bring to your notice that payment will be made
to you by means of a cashier check in the amount of ($1,500 )This
amount he asked me to let you know would come in this form due to an
earlier order he made with a Company in the States but did not go
through due to delay in Shippment of goods he ordered.

To conclude the transaction,Send your Name, Phone # and Address to
enable my Client forward it to the Company to make out the check in
your Name. When the check gets to you,you are to refund the excess
amount of ($1,000) to his Shipper via western union money Or money gram
transfer immediately to enable him arrange for the Shipping of the
vehicle on time.So confirm this and provide the information for payment
to be sent to you.
via priority mail.

Thanks,
Paul Dawson

When I told him I wanted to talk to someone over the phone before anything went any further, He never wrote back.

sounds exactly like the scam where they used classified ads. You just experienced an updated version.

how the scam works is they send you a bad cashier check that takes it a few weeks to bounce. mean while you cashed it at your bank and returned the rest to him and gave him the car as bonus! because he aranged the shipping you have no way to stop the delivery till it to late. And you are not going to overseas to recover it any way so you just have to eat it!

Yeah that's the latest scam going. I suppose the lesson here is, wait for the guys check to clear before proceeding any further. If they won't wait for it to clear, tell them to take their business elsewhere.

A friend of mine played their game all the way out, got the cashier's check for his 30,000.00, and framed it, it gets a lot of questions when people come into the shop. They sent him a couple emails asking about where the car was, and he told them he would not allow delivery until the check cleared, it didn't, so he just framed it, and laughs about it.
