I have two local yards with used trannys for my 97 Bird. I can get a very low-mileage one for about $450, or one with 195K for about $175. Seeing as how I'm paying labor to put it in, and the car has about 145K on it and no certainty that something else won't break in the near future, would you go for cheap or lower miles?

Low miles and as new as possible, 200k is way too much. I wouldn't buy a used trans with more than 50k frankly.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't put a trans with 195K into my car unless it was a last resort. Also, while looking for a trans, see if you can get one out of a 98 or newer Mustang, as that will give you a stronger trans and also a slightly better converter.

Re-pinning a connector and swapping your MLPS sensor onto the new trans, and that is it.

Sweet. 1998 through what year? Also, what about Grand Wags and Crown Vics? Will their 4R70W's work too?

CV/GM trans will work, like was said as long as it isn't the police version. Also Town-car transmissions are the same as the police crown vic, and will not work. The advantage to the Mustang one is you get the smaller converter, which gives you a slightly higher stall speed and allows you to rev slightly higher, however even a 98-03 CV/GM trans will be a vast improvement over what you already have.
