I got me a 95 Cougar with a stock 4.6 sohc it has around 125k-130k miles on it "guessing with the odometer dead"

It runs great and don't use any oil it's been well taken care of from the last owners.

I'm kind of a lead footer on the freeway/highway when theres little traffic around me.

Can this engine take that kind of abuse over time?

transmission will puke first before the engine will.

Worry about the transmission. The owners before me replaced the transmission at 85K on my car. And that transmission just went out on me at 127K. Thats with ZERO neutral drops or any extreme abuse...

thats a little ****ed up if you have to replace your trans 2 times before the 200k mark, Im hoping to make it to 200k on my first and then get something bullet proof. Yeah the engine can take a lot of abuse, I personally had a 4.6 (bought with 60k on it) in my 97 grand marquis and I ran the hell out of that thing for 40k and it never once gave me a problem. I had a very heavy foot always wot at the lights. I had true duels with no muffs and a K & N and the engine was always strong and pulled nicely. I miss the sound of that car.

You think that's bad, try replacing transmissions as often as FWD Chrysler or GM vehicles do. I have not met someone who owned one of these who hasn't had issues with transmissions. From my own experience, we have owned two buicks (1997/2001), one's tranny went out before the 30k mark, the other lost an engine before the 80k mark. We also owned a pontiac (1986) that had the tranny go before 30-40k. FWD Chryslers have been just as fun in my experience.

If I remember correctly, the manual in my thunderbird said the tranny fluid should be changed every 30k-40k miles. Alot of people forget that.

Too many people wait until there is a problem before they change their transmission fluid and filter. Prevent it with 20k - 30k fluid/filter changes.

Now that im out of the snow and rust belt I will never drive a fwd car ever. I couldn't afford have it fixed anyway. I know that heat in AZ is a crazy tranny killer, so bought the huge aluminum tru cool 40k that by passes my radiator. I wonder how much time that has bought me, cause that all you do with the stock trans is just buy time, but eventually time will win. That 4.6 engine with good maintenance will last a long time, but i guess the trick is knowing when something needs changing or just knowing how long parts are going to last. Isn't the intake a real POS though, i have a 94 and I havent blown it yet but I did on my 97 grand marquis after driving it 3 months.

A whole crapload. I drive the snot out of my car and it has never once complained due to that. Regarding the engine, mine had 320K on it when it died. Looks like it sucked the pan dry, but I did have my rev limiter set higher than factory and with that mileage I knew it was coming sooner or later. PI swap starts soon. :)

Anyway, with regular maintenance it will live a very long happy life.

Oh, Yeah!

I bought mine at ~120k miles, and it's ~210k now; It still runs great.

I have replaced the transmission, (at 200k); and you have to replace the driveshaft if you want to drive fast (>80 for long), the stock ones s*ck. They will go bad, and can kill the transmission bushings, loosen the tailhousing bolts, and kill the rear end.

How do I know this, you ask? (lol)

I also get great gas mileage; check my sig.

Wow I jest got home from work and noticed all the reply's...

cool cool cool Thanx all for your reply's...

I plan on making my car last and adding a clean paint job when I get My tax return next year hopefully if nothing else comes up.. :) It's in good shape for a 95...

My Transmission works and shifts fine for now, I added some Lucas transmission fluid and the filter and fluid was changed not too long back.

Mine has 205,xxx and still runs strong, great gas mileage too.
Haven't had a problem with the stock tranny either, other than replacing the pan gasket

ok this thread is not being hijacked by me because its already turned into a tranny thread 10 posts ago but... my stock tranny mount is still good but is it necessary to use a solid rubber one for longer tranny life?

I have to add my comment on the 4.6l. Mine has 166k on it and burns almost no oil between changes and still has good compression in all cylinders. I beat the piss outta my car a good deal and the engine has yet to fail me.
