I am going to be putting an M5R2 behind the 393 that I'm putting in my 91. I already have a trans I pulled out of a parts car that is used, but has no problems. I also have an 89 XR7 that has worn out 2nd and 3rd synchros. What I'm debating right now is if I should put the good trans behind the 393, or should I put it in the 89 and send that trans out to be built up to handle more power? I just don't want to destroy a perfectly good trans that I can put to good use if it won't be able to take the extra power.

it really depends on driving style
powershifting it will get you 30 miles down the road before it breaks
driving like a sane human will get you going good
ted lyons 331 supercharged tbird race car was powered with a m5r2

I know the M5R2 has a `oiling' system.. but wonder if forcing oiling (IE drill/tap/install sprayer.. then add oil pump and cooler) would be a good idea :)

But yah 330 sounds low, since isn't that what the 94/5 SCs make?!?!

But i would crack open the top of the good one, see how bad the sychros are, just becuase it shifts fine NOW doesn't mean in 5,000miles it still will be :) and it's easier NOW to fix it then later.. BUT after that, put it into the '89 then Fully rebuild the '89's..

Also with Ted Lyons T-bird, last i heard (long time ago), the only issues he has with the tranny is the sychros..

IF i'm not mistaken, the M5R2 was never used behind a 351 explicitly due to the fact it wouldnt last. I would almost bet a nickel that it was only used with a 300-6 and the 302 in the trucks.

Well we'll see how finances look when the car is ready to go on the road. If there's enough money to rebuild the 89s trans, then I will do that and put the known good one in the 89. Or if I need to drop the trans out of the 89 for any reason between now and then, I'll just put the good trans back up and send the other out to get rebuilt. Hopefully it will hold up for a while either way.

M5R2s are lot stronger than T-5s that's why Ford didn't use T-5 in Super Coupes. There is few SC with around 400 RWTQ and using M5R2s.They are pretty strong trans, only weak point in them are the synchros.Synchros don't brake they just wear off. They're truck trans so they weren't designed to be powershifted quick.Only problems I had with my trany was the 2-nd gear synchro and there is no aftermarket parts to make these tranys stronger.

That's what I needed to hear. I knew the M5R2 was stronger than the T5, but I didn't know exactly how much power they could take. I don't think my motor will be making 400ft-lbs at the rear wheels, so that leads me to believe I'll be Ok.

PS. When I do get the trans rebuilt, is there anything I can do to make the synchros last any longer?

I've had mine behind the 5oh for a year now with no problems they put them in broncos also. i too was thinking a bout adding a filter, pump assembly I would use the filer and drain taps before putting another hole in the trans.

Have custom ones made up, or see if there's someone out there that can reline the Sychros with a better metrial..

So just pump the oil from the drain to the Fill openings??? Hmm kinda sounds redundent then.. not THAT much to filter, unless something NASTY! happens.. An oil cooler may be nice idea thou.. since i found with my M5 it says warmer longer then the engine does

Personally i still like to try the spraying thing.. just where the heck does one get the sprayers :)
