Ballpark figure, how much should paying someone to replace this engine with either a used or rebuilt 3.8? If possible, the two prices would be appreciated. Thanks.
Who would I take it to to do the swap for only 500? Would I be able to put the newer engine with the headgasket problem solved without any sort of major issue?
you have the 94 right? i do too and when my hg's went i swapped in a 97 3.8 with the better hg's and it was freshly rebuilt by ford. i got it for $550 at a j/y and put it in myself. you can ask questions if you have them. i may still remember.
That wouldn't be too bad, I'm in bayside now, the throgs neck is like 1/8 mile from my apartment. I'm going to wait and see what this other guy can do as far as price. I'll leave your cousin in mind though. Thanks.
hmm, your 94 had DIS already? you're still going to have to swap the harness because the big main plug is different from 94 to 97. at least mine was. your's might be the same. if they are, no need to swap.
You'll have no problem with the 97 engine, especially with the DIS you have already. I'm not sure if there are any differences with the sensors between the 2 different model years, but if they different are just swap in your old ones. Locations should be the same. I really don't think you have to worry about the harness at all, plug and play!
the 97 engine i got had one huge plug on the harness. my 94 had 2 smaller plugs hence my need to swap harness's. if yours are the same, that saves you some time.
Between the years, things did change. Nearly all the connectors to the sensors changed to be easier to remove. The locations are essentially identical for all the sensors on the engine with the exception of the air charge temp sensor. In earlier engines it was located in an intake manifold runner and in later engines was mounted in the air intake box. That said, you can't use the sensors or harness from a 96/97 engine in an earlier engine not only due to the differences in connectors but also the difference in the PCM. 96/97 was EEC-V (OBDII) while the earlier engines are EEC-IV (OBDI).
Nice... this is looking like an easy swap lucky for California emissions.... now just to find someone who wants to do it...pnyklr... PM me with a price from your cousin if you will.
i found a 93 cougar 3.8 w/ 60,xxx miles for $300. about 15-20,xxx later the hg's blew. so i luckily still had the original motor w/ new heads so the hg fix was real cheap. anyways i wish ida just did the 5.0 carbed swap instead. now i gotta wait.
