well...i just recommend to polish them...

porting them yourselves can be tricky..and if you mess up them...you gotta either buy new ones or deal w/what you got..

but to polish them....jus take some sand paper(not sure..220?440? someone help??) im not sur eon paper tho..i can find out soon.

but porting is very dangerous if you havent done it before...just a precaution.

porting and polishing give the air a better path to flow through...since they are casted the inside of the ports are ruff and jagged...which makes a bumpy surface for air to ride on....

doing this procedure can or get rid of some..or all ridges....but be carefull!!

Basic porting, you can do at home, offers worthwhile flow improvements;
certainly all you can use, within the RPM range of a reasonable street cam.

Many 13-second SCs on the Fastest SCs list are running home-ported heads.

Unlike all-out Race porting, Basic porting does not remove much material;
so the chances of ruining a head are miniscule.
[besides, good 3.8 n/a heads are only $50/pair @ salvage, anyway, so wtf?]

Cam selection makes a huge difference, too, maybe more than the porting itself, and it is really not expensive, just a lot of work.

Question

what would you be looking at for a horse power and torque gain by porting and polishing?

When I get ready to P&P my heads, I'm going to try and find some cheap ones to practice with before I do mine. Is there a way to check them even if I don't put them on a car? Like just get the cheap pair to practice with - since I have no intention of putting them on a car, how do I know if they are OK?
