What would be the specs for the idealy matched turbo for a 4.6? I plan to build a 100% custom turbo and would like to know what the specs would be on the turbines to make the perfect turbo for my car. Don't tell me about how hard it will be and how it is better to just buy a turbo I have all the tools that I will ever need and people that will help me along the way. The tools that I have are: HAAS VF3SS and a HAAS SL20 so dont preach to me about them either. Sorry to be on so much of a defence but I feel that I would be bombarded with statements on how it cant be done and other comments of that nature.

Yeah...we have a bunch of that type equipment were I work too, but it didn't do me any good for building a turbo system.

I used 2 used junkyard T03s for the setup I built its still in the progress and will be for a while. The T03s were off of the older chrysler 2.3 and 2.5 motors. hence double 2.3 you get 4.6! many junkyard 5.0 mustang guys have used older TO3s before. If you have the cash there are many ways to go. Are you planning to build a single or a twin setup??

The best way to match a turbo to an engine isn't to say "____________ turbo is the best for a 4.6". Each particular engine/vehicle combination requires a different turbocharger. Call Turbonetics, Garrett, MHI or other turbo manufacturers and they'll match a turbo for you just as comp, crower etc will match a cam for you.

I plan to make tis a long project, money is the main reason, I have a HAAS service tech (the dude that sows new customers how to use the machines) helping me. They make custom turbos at the trade shows for the demos. I priced it out and it should run about 200-300$ to build a balanced ball berring turbo. I was asking how I should go about doing this because I can map it however I want to and I wanted to know how to set it up for goot ET's but mostley to be really fun to drive.

Many parts of a turbo start with a casting that is only usable for a certian size turbo. I suppose making the main shaft would be pretty easy at a trade show, but machining the compressor wheel would be very involved and requires a ton of programing. Castings require patterns and molds and then are machined to work on a certian size turbo.

Just because you have access to a couple CNC machines doesn't mean you can just "map out" whatever turbo you want and the machine will make it for you. The turbo has to be designed, the machine just does whatever you program it to do with the material you give it to work with. The only way you could get it for $200-$300 is if they already manufacture a specific turbo and were giving you a deal on it. To make a one off turbo from scratch would cost thousands upon thousands.

Seriously...Talk with the various turbo manufacturers and determine what size turbo you need for your car, and buy one.

using 4.6 as your base leaves a lot to be answered for turbines and such. I can tell you right now a 60-1 is pretty close to optimal (excluding GT and high tech turbos) the turbine size really varies depending on the rest of the car and what you're gonna use it for. Like david said, talk to some manufacturers and get some ideas

the idea of building a turbo sounds cool but i just think it would be easier and cheaper to buy one. One thing to look into is variable geometry turbos. They have vanes on the turbine housing outlets. The vanes close up at low flow to create velocity to spool the turbo faster which will help in a single turbo setup. Twin turbos will spool quicker because you will have two smaller turbos than one big one. If you do go the route of building a turbo is wish you luck and keep the project updated Im interested to see how it goes!!
