1) Take the belt off and check the AIR (smog) pump located below the alternator on the right side of the engine. Should be the lowest left pulley when you're facing the car. It should spin free by hand, not make any noise, and have no "tight" spots. The bearings have a tendency to go bad and it will often throw the belt. 2) Check the pulley alignment... if one of the pulleys is out of alignment (too far forward or too far back from the others), it'll throw the belt. Power steering pulley may be the culprit if the pump has been replaced. If it is the smog pump, there's a thread on this site showing how to by-pass the smog pump with a shorter belt. 92" long, me thinks, but do a search and check the thread to make sure.

Just don't get your panties in a wad, and get the headlights fixed! :D

Merry Christmas, and a better New Year for both you and your Bird.

That is all...

alright well today, i woke up and it was gorgous (for being december) but i put the belt back on, but before i did, i checked the pulleys and took some pictures. The power steering pump pulley has play, it moves back and forth alittle (i got 2 pictures showing) how do i tighten the pulley? also is the pulley on the tensioner supposed to be somewhat tight when spinning it? and i check the smog and it seems ok, makes a noise, dont kno if thats what its supposed to do lol, but ya heres some pics!!!!!

A small amount of play in & out is normal for the power steering pump (shouldn’t be much more than 1/16 of an inch). A semi tight tensioner pulley isn't good. They normally don’t freewheel very much but they should spin a little when spun by hand. The air pump makes a small amount of noise normally. How difficult is the tensioner to move into position?

the tensioner isnt that hard to move, but the pulley maybe makes one full rotation when i try to spin it, i might just replace the bearing maybe? and i wanna pull the smog, but right now i dont feel like buying a new belt again

Buy a new idler and a new tensioner, from there, when the car is running, watch your pulleys, all you can see. Any that wobble, replace that unit, IE, alternator or AC.

If one is binding or does not turn smoothly, you found the culprit.

Also, see what your water pump bearings are like, take the belt off and see if there is any play, that is prob the one.

water pump was just replaced not too long ago, so im prolly goin to buy a new tensioner, and new idler, but just for reference, if i were to buy all new pulleys which ones fit? and if i left the a/c in, pulled the smog pump, and put the pulleys (previous question) on, what size belt am i lookin at?
