Pretty soon im gonna buy the SCT 9100 Flasher, which is pretty much, a SCT chip, but in flasher form. Ok, i have read, that to minimize detonation, and maximize power, use 22C plugs and a 180 T stat. Since im in cali, i prolly wont be able to pass smog with this stuff. Id have to set the stock tstat, stock plugs, and stock tune back in when i smog. Anyway, where is the Tstat housing located, so u can remove the old one, and install the new one? The spark plugs look pretty easy to change on the driver side, but the passenger side looks a little tougher.

yep, i found it, its right next to the alternator, i also found that out, on the modualr depot forums, they said the same thing, thx anyway, ah, i could prolly keep the 22C plugs in an pass, but the 180 tstat and reflash wont fly though.

for some reason, my dad is bein a total *** he says ur not doing anything crap, im like w/e, (considering i paid for most of the car, i pay insurance and gas, and for oil changes, etc.) he thinks that changing plugs n tstat is gonna somehow "Hurt" the car. If u tune it for it, it should be fine, god he pisses me off, then i said when it comes u emission controls, just put the stock tstat back in god he makes me so mad..

hehe, pull a plug wire and tell him its running 'rough' and you need new plugs. and as far as the tstat goes, just be like im flushing the coolent to make the car run cooler and changing the tstat is just routine maintence.

that wont work, he wont let me do somethin like that, besides, i dont kno if the tstat or plugs have been changed or not, cant really tell, havent looked. Prolly should be, Can it really hurt the car to have a 180 tstat and 22C plugs on the car, and if its tuned properly, god sometimes i feel like taking a brick and wacking it upside his head sometimes cause he doesnt know what hes talkin bout, and makes up all this bs that itll "screw the car up or w/e".

is it really necessary to install a 180 t-stat on a N/A engine anyway?

with that you can run more timing which is ideal for higher octane gasoline, which can give you more power

so it all boils down to getting more power.........run higher octane gasoline, and you can add more timing (for increased power)...........and to prevent the risk of detonation that advanced-timing can sometimes bring about, make the heads/plugs run cooler.........install a 180* Tstat, and the heads run cooler.....install 1-step colder plugs, and the plugs retain less heat that would otherwise promote detonation

if only i can get my father to stop bein a dick an listen, its my money, im payin for it, and im the one payin the bills on the car, i should be able to do what i want with it, besides new spark plugs, and tstat isnt hard to install, but, the changing the Tstat spills coolant everywhere from what ive heard...

the t stat is an easy job, just the two bolts, if its your money and you pay the bills, just go ahead and do it, a chip definitly makes a thunderbird a diffrent car, just make sure not to rev her past 5400 and you will be ok, you can rev her right to 5400, but past that its dangerous, and id think with the plugs and t stats, with your stock 3 cats there you would easily pass smog test, even in CA

id prolly set the shift points at 5300 or so, anyway, changing plugs looks easy as well, right next to the injectors, the plugs on driver side r easy to get to, passenger side looks a little tougher. but, for a tstat, u got to be careful.

The best improvement to these cars without changing a dog gone shift point is re -do that punny exhaust. Costs a little more than the chip merry go round, but if you want HP on the highway, it's the ticket. Start there. It keeps you're resale value up, and makes you go "OH YEAH!" that's what I'm taking about. It will make all the intake upgrades work much better. If I could do it again, I would have done exhaust first. ED.

u guys arent gonna believe this heres what my dad says "Installing a 180 tstat and 22Cs will cause the car to run rich, and foul the convertors up"....While this is true on a STOCK tune, is it true of the car is tuned for it? God my dad is such a jerk, he wont let me mod my own freaking car. HE also says my gas mileage will drop with a SCT chip or w/e HAHAH. Plz debunk all of this...

I'm going to assume that your father is not a car person. I love when people chime in their thoughts on things they have no idea about.

The plugs are a 20 minute job on your 97. Just get a long extension to get them out, and be sure to do it on a stone cold motor, and use some anti seize on the threads.

The thermostat is a two minute job, it has a reusable O ring so you just drop the new thermostat in and torque it down.

I don't see a benefit in an exhaust upgrade on a stock tbird. You can run low 14's without even touching the exhaust.

My list of basic mods for a stock 97 would be: SCT Tune, Trans flush and cooler and inline filter, Copper Plugs, Jmod, high stall converter, then 373's or 410's or 430's, pi intake, underdrive pulleys, electric water pump.

With these basic mods you will be able to run fast and suprise alot of people in your 4000 pound sled.

actually yes, my father is a car person, he was a mechanic, but years ago, bout 20 or so years ago. He hasnt worked on cars for years, my uncle on the otherhand is a different story, and he told him that i believe, but supposedly that would only be true on a stock tune?
