I am curious to know if anyone who has done the J-mod has had any transmission failures or problems with their tranny? Or has this been the cause of any other problems besides whip-lash? I have heard positive things but want to verify all. Can any dumb a** do it or should I have a shop try to do this for me on my 94' 3.8 LX?

I have a 94 3.8L LX...and I had the J-mod done......Let me tell you, this is an excellent mod...I have had it on since last November. It will give your tranny a longer life and will keep it from excessive slippage and friction, which reduces heat.....I also had a Tranny cooler put on... I left one of the springs out, and I love the way my car shifts(I highly suggest a Tranny cooler...I recommend B&M, they have a low pressure drop system).

I had A-Train, (one of the Tranny experts on this Board) do the mod and tranny cooler for me.......You can do it yourself if your confident enough...I mean how much do you trust yourself?....Everybody on here says that it's easy enough to do yourself...and alot of people do it themselves.....However, I never worked on a Tranny ever, so I wanted to let an Expert do it.....I trusted A-Train ( he's a very cool guy and very Knowledgeable) to do it more than a Tranny Shop...But if you find a reputable tranny shop, they should be able to follow the instructions in the articles.

Diablo,

I agree with Beiruts Finest. If you have some mechanical skills, then you can tackle it. If you have no idea what the difference is between an 8mm and a 9mm wrench...you're in for some noodle scratching.

It's pretty straight forward, but 90% of the people who do it run into a kink every now and then (including myself which I left out OD). It's best to let an experienced mechanic handle it if you aren't sure. I even got a Ford tech at a Ford dealer to install a pre-drilled plate from the man, for a customer of his.

The mod can be done to your 3.8L 4R70W. It won't hurt the tranny if done correctly, but it won't promote durability alone. You have to do the accumulators and get yourself a plate style tranny cooler as well.

Diablo...A-Train is right....I forgot to mention that I also had my accumulators updated along with a 96-97 deep sump tranny pan....and Never forget Mercon V.....

Just to give you an Idea...I was skeptical about this Mod in the very beginning....I mean...It was created by a guy I have never seen or heard of in my life until I visited the TCCoA.....Finally, after I saw how many people loved it, and started thinking about it......I had a long conversation with Jerry himself about this Mod and tranny coolers...I was asking plenty of questions and he had no problem answering any of them....He knew my tranny like the back of his hand.....There was not one answer he gave me that i was uncomforatable with.......
After all that, I had a conversation with A-Train about this Mod as well....and he aslo gave me alot of input and explained it just like Jerry, again there was not one thing he told me that I had any doubt about....Think about it!!..The guy who designed your tranny created this Mod...you can't go wrong.

I say about 80% of the people on this board did the J-Mod..if not more.

So I went ahead and did the Mod...I love it
Trust me...If I did it, than you know it's safe, cause I do alot of research before attemting anything that i am skeptical about.

Well yes I am a lil' skepticla but after hearing everyone praise it so much, this is a mod I would like to try. Let me ask this. Do the tech article contain everything I need to do this? I think I am going to print it up and take it to the tranny shop and see if I can get them to do this for me. Which B&M cooler did you use? Can I get Mercon V anywhere? Once again thx. for all your feedback.

I used the B&M 28,000 GVW tranny cooler...The largest one they make...Mercon V can be bought at any Ford dealership.....And Yes the tech articles contain everything you need....Just print them out and take it to the tranny shop.

Make sure you get all the updated parts and for the mod.

Can someone give me a list of just which parts I need? I know about the 1-2 spring, the 1-2 piston, 2-3 piston, and the drilling of the holes. Isn't there an overdrive piece too? I've read most of the tranny articles a couple of times, seems like I'm missing something still. Aren't there alot of parts in there that would be optional that I don't need? I know it will be a few yrs. before I see 350+ hp. Also I think that some parts of my tranny have been replaced, but it shifts so slow. Where's the best place to get parts from? 5 Star or my local Ford dealer? Thanks

Use 5-Star Ford for your parts. If you are a TCCoA member, you will get a good discount.

Print out all three articles and have them handy when you talk to the tranny shop.

You need to decide how much of the J-mod you want to do.

Here's what I used, with the exception of the pan. I used a 97 by mistake.

Pre-drilled separator plate purchased from "The Man"
F8UZ-7A194-AA - Tranny pan with drain plug.
F6AZ-7A098-A - Filter assembly that goes with deep sump tranny pan
F7AZ-7F251-AA - 1-2 revised accumulator piston.
F75Z-7F284-AA - Light blue spring for top of 1-2 accumulator.
F7AZ-7F284-BA - Bottom spring for 1-2 accumulator (optional - leave spring out for firmer 1-2 shift).
F7AZ-7H292-AB - 2-3 revised accumulator piston
MERCON-V ATF Fluid

I did the J-Mod at 148,00 miles and the tranny continues to operate well at 170,000

Diablo...Rolling Thunder is right print out all 3 articles.

The parts you want are exactlt what Rolling Thuder listed....However..The Pan is optional..you can get one with or without the plug......But they are both deep sump pans...and I personally left the bottom spring out.....I was worried about not getting a smooth shift, and was hesitant to leave it out...But it's bad at all, I still get a smooth shift....but I have a 3.8L

five star doesnt ship mercon v... grab 15 quarts if you getting a cooler installed, it will run you about $53 ........


when the cooler is mounted... a lot of people will tell you not to strap it into the ac condensor... Mine is in there, and so is A-trains, and we have yet to see any problems, but if you want to be super cautious, i would recommend mounting it elsewere... and when you order the cooler, the 28000GVM one does not come with a mounting kit, barbed fitting or hose....so you will have to pick all that up.. unless you purchase a cooler that comes with the entire kit which they also sell....depending on your mounting configuation of choice, you are going to need the tranny mounting kit if you are going to strap it to the ac condensor...... the kit is about $15 from summitt... believe me, these mods are the best thing you could do for your transmission, i havent had any problems since my mods... good luck.....

I'm planning on doing it myself, but I only have 2 thick piles of stuff printed off, I guess I'd better print some more, thanks for the part numbers, now if I can find them dam drill bits.

Try Sears Hardware for the drill bits.

Also, McMaster Carr Inc., sells them, and you can usually get stuff in 1-2 days, UPS ground. 1-732-329-3200

I have my 28,000 GVM Tranny cooler mounted to my AC condenser too....After I saw that A-Train had it on there...I figured it was fine..despite what everyone else on this board said.....It's been on there since November of 2001.

Did you just zip-tie it to the condensor lines or what?

Am I reading this correctly where people are saying they got pre-drilled seperator plates from Jerry? Is this pre-drilled with all the new holes u were gonna have to make? Sorta like all you have to do is drain, unhook, throw out old plate, install new one and filter and all the new springs and goodies, then put back in? Or is this a pre-drilled plate where the holes still need to be enlarged.... If it's a pre-drilled plate with the proper enlarged holes, does Jerry just readily sell these or what? Also how much can one be gotten for....

Diablo....Jerry Leaves that option up to you....It depends on how firm you want the 1-2 shift...If you want it really firm...leave the spring out (I'm not sure how big of a difference it makes).....If you want a less firm shift...Then put the spring in.....
You have a 3.8L like me....and I'm sure A-Train will tell you leave the spring out, just like he told me....It's not like you have a 5.0 that's gonna give you a whiplash when going into 2nd.
