Well, after my frusterating defeat vs. the transmission cooler, I was supposed to go to the movies with my girlfriend and see the Punisher; however, even this did not happen.. (which was not cool!)

Anyways, more to the point. She needed her oil filter to be taken off, since her dad screwed on there so tight I couldn't get it off when I changed the oil, so Krista (my g/f) took it to their neighbor (Roger), who is a Ford Mechanic to do the job.

I was cruising around at the time, but when over 30 minutes passed of cruising, and she still had not called I decided to go over there.

I walk into his garage, he is working a 94-96 GT Mustang (had a 5.0 in it, but was not the Fox Body of the early 90s) and he had the transmission of it on the table, working on it. It seems Krista had told Roger that I was installing a transmission cooler in the car, and of course I was embarassed. I thought I'd have it done by 1 p.m. Seeing that I started at 11. Anyways, he tells me how Ford makes a transmission cooler kit and that I should of gotten that one. I told him why I was putting it on (better for the trans, and extends life). He claims (this is where he begins to tear me apart), <b> Ford transmissions break for 2 reasons: Fluid, and an internal mechanical flaw. The only way it can be fixed is by fixing the mechanical flaw with new parts. A transmission cooler helps, but not that much.</b>

So this is when I spoke of the J-Mod and how a lot of Mustang/T-Bird owners do it to their car to provide firmer shifts <b>(I may of incorrectly said a few things, seeing that I do not know much about the J-Mod)</b>. I told him that they take apart the transmission, add new parts (I did mention like a Mark VIII pan, which I thought was in the J-Mod), to strengthen the tranny and make it more like a Mark VIII transmission (or more powerful, can't remember which I said).

He claims that: <i><b>"They [those who J-mod] are on crack." </i></b> and that shift kits are the way to go, since he installs them all the time. His transmission in his 03 FX Level II is supposed to be the sh*t or something (he was speaking highly about it, I can't remember exactly what was said. About this time, I was getting pissed).

Either way, I left shortly afterwards (I was pretty pissed), he keeps my g/f late ( I guess unscrewing a filter with a tool takes too damn long ), we miss The Punisher completely, and I have to put up with her defending him.

So.. are all you J-Modders on crack? Or am I on crack in thinking that aftermarket products on my T-Bird are worthwhile?

Let me know.

(Sorry for the long post, I just think it's crap that everywhere I freakin' look I get shot down or told how I am wasting my money. For ten or twenty minutes, I was like... Screw modding, I should stop before I spend too much, but now it makes me only want to modify my car more, so I can spank his FX Level II)

Not really sure to be honest. To me it seems like he's working 24/7, by recommending nothing but Ford stuff to put on a Ford (aka. Aftermarket is bad).

dont have a J-modable model thunderbird myself (kinda wish I did) so I cant personally vouch for it... but didnt Jerry design the damn transmission? I'm willing to bet he knows what hes talking about.

The J-Mod doesn't have anything to do with making a transmission more like a Mark VIII trans...heck the j-mod should be done to a Mark transmission. The major portion of the J-Mod is drilling larger holes into the separator plate which will permit fluid to flow faster.

I'd trust the engineer who designed the transmission a heck of a lot sooner than this guy. I'd also recommend that you go over to MD and find threads where Jerry himself specifically talks about Transgo kits and why they suck.

Well, who is this Jerry guy anyway? I know he designed the modification, but exactly who he is? A Ford mechanic?

And the JMod does use all factory Ford parts, so tell the guy to shove it.

Former Ford drivetrain engineer. He was on the team that, as Eric said, designed the 4R70W transmission.

I'll tell you what man, in my 1996 Cavalier it was a true bastard to replace that oil filter. I never did it, I took it to an oil changer shop because it was so much trouble.

I agree with that sentiment too. I'll pit my 97 tbird with 3.73s and a jmod against an identically equipped car with his 'magic shift kit' any day. :)

Supposedly the man I am talking about visists the forums here occasionally, if he decides to respond to this, I hope we get this cleared up. He knows who I am, so if he posts here, feel free to contact me in person.
