What I want ask is I have the pi heads and intake timing chain and every thing needed.

What I want to ask is would there be any interference with the bottom end and the valves if the heads came from a mustang ramero engine.

If it came with a mild cam and different valves when I pulled them from the engine.

I am about to send them off to a machine shop to double check if there is not any issue with them pressure check and new valve guides. if there off and at the machine shop to get checked out why not replace them while there off.

What I really want to ask once I get the heads back and every thing on could there be any valve slap with the piston? I am kind of afraid of having that happen.

The other thing is would I have to run break in oil in the engine to help prevent failure of the cam bearing or chain failure.

I was going to use it any way just for insurance not for the bottom for the top and chain.

personally I cant wait in a way to button every thing together.

I have the pi intake already on and runs like it is not like it was anemic I cant wait till the heads. do to riding in the same 95 year I got a ride in which was a lot more umph. I wish I could have asked him more questions but he had to leave the car show for a family thing

The only way you can have the Piston-To-Valve problem is if you over-advance the camshaft when you install it.

I'm no expert as I've never dialed in a camshaft on these engines, but I would think if you install your cams "straight up" (no advancing), you shouldn't have a problem.

You can always do the clay test and see how much clearance you really have if you are nervous - just use the old head gaskets that are 'pre-crushed' and check it out. That should give you some peace of mind.

If you're assembling used parts, you shouldn't need break-in oil. If you are putting new bearings, inserts, camshaft, or valve train components, then yes, use a good dino oil to break it in, change it after 100 or so miles, then again at 500 miles.

That's my advice, but I'm sure someone here who has already done what you're doing will speak up!

non-detergent dino-oil is for when you need to seat the rings. If you are not doing new rings in freshly honed cylinder bores, you don't need any kind of break-in oil.

You need to time the engine properly to not have PTV contact. Even then you mention "IF" it came with a mild cam---what does that mean?? DO the heads come with aftermarket cams, or DON"T they? It's one or the other. There is always a chance of PTV contact if you don't know what you're doing.

When using PI heads on a stock npi block and rotating assembly, Im pretty there is a issue when using higher lift cams. Hence why MHS suggest you have the intake valve ground down when using high lift cams.

It's not the lift that causes the problem, it's a combination of intake lobe duration & [a potentially unchecked and problematic] intake lobe centerline location.

GM is correct. To understand what's going on, the intake valve is opening faster than the piston (on it's way down the intake stroke) has a chance to get out of the way .

That makes sense to me - I hope it helps others wording it like that ;)

Maybe this makes it clearer - see where the 'intake valve opens' event is right after Top Dead Center?


As you advance the cam, you move that event closer to the TDC (where the piston is!)

what I mean by a mild cam was the stock cam from the heads that I got from a 01 mustang gt

I had a machine shop go over every thing on the heads straight down to the valves. to make sure every thing was ok I wanted to ask about did I have to break in the engine again.

I rebuilt the bottom end do to the factory flaw of the head gaskets. at the time I didn't have the money to do the pi head swap at the time I was wondering about it.

These are the "PI Cams" people are talking about above.

If they're stock PI cams, then just throw them in like they would from the factory.

right now I am waiting to get new intake gaskets again and exhaust gaskets. I did the intake swap to pi. it woke it up I am going to put picks in my file and go from there. to show what I have done not just that to have a reminder for me that I did some thing I love to drive. I love the thunderbird and cougar body type. just wish the rear windows open though

Thank you for the help right now I am looking for a tuner for my cougar as well I am not sure where to get it from there is not much in Lakeland fl to go to. to e able to get a tune the one speed shop looked at me like I was from another planet. another looked at me like I was weird.

I have a question where to get a xcal tuner or some thing like that with out being looked at funny
