i know there is info on this in the tech section, but it seems a little outdated. I was wondering what the best way to fix/replace these things were. better to buy new/used? i have a 97 LE if that helps.

thanks,
lee

The best way to fix these is to just buy a new one. You can still get them.

The second best way is to buy a used one from a junkyard, or someone here.
You might be able to test a junkyard unit, by simply plugging it in to your existing harness in the trunk.

The third way would be the cut open and replace LED strip method.

I did that twice, and they lasted for over four years longer.

However, it is a moderate amount of work, and you run the risk of damaging your own housing.

would replacing them with cold cathode tubes work? i would think so, with the right amount of shrouding... then it would be even and wouldnt go out. cheaper than led's...

The inside of the housing is very narrow where the LED strip is mounted- like only 1/2" approx.

If you can get one to fit inside there, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

1/2''? i would fit TWO ccfl tubes in there lol... gues i might order some cheapos when i get new tails, and try this one out. lots of hot glue should make this work. the two ccfl tubees i have under my dash are only about 1/4" wide. and theres a backlight from a laptop i have that is only abuot 1/8".. its in my xbox tho.

Well i got my cathode tubes today. played around abit. found that there is ABSOLUTELY no way to take that damn lens off. that would make things sooo much easier. well, i burned myself and cut myself twice in the process of the lens removal.
Anyway, the cathodes i ordered were a bit too small. lengthwise that is. and i should have got them in red instead of white. my next try should be pretty damn good. sinhumane will post my pics up here for me. driver side is the cold cathode.

sweet. i took the cathode from the tube it was in and only had to drill a 1/4" hole into the side of the taillight. you have to use the 12v inverter that it comes with. that would have to be mounted in the trunk between the taillights.
