I was determined to not do the steering shaft mod to fit these manifolds so I decided to cut and weld the driver side to clear the steering shaft. These are from a 99/01 Cobra. My welds aren't great its been some 6 or 7 years since I welded but I think it will work. I still have a little bit more fabricating to do because the flange does make contact with the block but I am determined to make it work :D

I hope the weld holds up. I know cast iron is a pain to weld.

It was hard to weld but it wasn't too bad. Luckily the manifolds were low mileage and there wasn't much contamination (carbon build up). I too hope the weld holds. I still need to figure out how to make it clear the block. I'd prefer not having to weld it again maybe I can shave down that piece of the block? :confused:

Yeah you could always cut that pad off the block .. it seems to be more for manufacturing processes than anything else.

That's what I am thinking. The transmission seems to have little to no contact with that pad. I'll probably will up doing that

Youre making these work in a 4V bird correct? Do you think cobra manifolds would work easier on a 2V? If not then what would be the best choice in manifolds when it comes to the 2V's? Not trying to do the steering shaft mod either.

They wont match up with the exhaust ports .. 2v and 4v are different.

I heard others have tried this mod on mark8s and the welds dont hold up or crack. However thinking about it going cast iron in a super hot environment is the best choice Id think. If you had them braincoated the heat retention would yield lower bay temps. I hope you get it to work out though I dont know all the technical reasons why others failed.

Contamination or not enough penetration is the primary cause for welding failures.
