after i complete the jmod for my 94 4R70W, is it safe to manually shift 1-2 and 2-1? in jerry's thesis there is a paragraph that states:

"On any 1996 and newer 4R70W, you can do all the manual 1-2 and 2-1 shifts and not hurt anything. If it were older than a 1996, I'd shy away from manual 1-2's unless you've modified the main control. I would stay away from excessive manual 4-2's on all transmissions older than 1998. In 1998 the manual valve changed to allow the direct clutch to exhaust faster, resulting in less wear."

so after i do the jmod, will the main control be modified in the way he is meaning? will the manual valve be changed to allow the direct clutch to exhaust faster?
i would just like to manually shift, but of course i dont want to hurt anything.

How was doing the jmod to the tranny i want to do it but im not mechicanly inclined shoot took apart an 87 tbird tc 3 1\2 years ago and am still trying to figure out how it goes together I see you are in columbus im here in huber by dayton let me know maybe we could hook up and try this mod,

i havent done it yet. what im waiting on is my flexplate for the markviii tc (going in at same time as jmod and tranny cooler).
Fubarian is gonna help me do this stuff. he's done it before. you're more than welcome to come up the day we do it. dont have a date yet, but if you remind me (pm me) i'll let you know as soon as i do.

The main control is different than the plate. I would say after you do the J mod you can do 4-2s, but not 1-2s

would it be enormously more involved to modify the main control while doing the jmod?

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish but I can tell you from multiple runs at the track you will be much faster if you let it do the shifting

Based on what the man says, I would assume that the problem is the timing of the clutch exhausts/applications during the shifts... and that the changes described in chapters 13-14 "Modifying the Main Control" would be sufficient to correct the problem. And if you were to purchase a 98+ main control, you would be able to downshift 4-2 all you wanted to as well.

wonder where can i purchase the main control?
is the main control = valve body?
usually junkyard sell it together with transmission....

yes theyre the same thing... you can buy a new one, but that gets expensive. either maybe youll luck out in a junkyard, or see if a mustang guy changed his vb to an aftermarket one and scoff that up. Again, this is optional, you dont have to if you dont want.

When I emailed the man about this question regarding my 95, he said it was fine to do the manual 1-2s but to still shy away from the 4-2s because we don't have the updated manual valve.

sorry to be repetitive, but the man says as long as the jmod is done, all the manual 1-2's we want? any idea about 2-1?(or would they be directly related anyway)
will it be as safe to do WOT 1-2's such as when 1-2's happen automatically at WOT?

now another question. ive read the thesis and my brain is not capable of fully understanding all of it.
if i choose not to touch OD and reverse when i do the jmod, is it still safe to do manual 1-2s?
