ok, so i'm somewhat of a domain name junkie, and have owned at least a dozen domains over the years. browsing around the other day, to my surprise, mn12.com was still untaken. so i figured cool, i get paid friday (today), i'll pick it up this weekend, and do something with it.

(btw, mn12.org has been taken for at least a little while already.)

well wouldn't you know it, YESTERDAY the domain mn12.com was registered ... to a SMUT SHOP. all it is is a redirection to some huge list of porn links.

if there's one thing in life i HATE, it's domain squatters.

oh well, i was still able to buy mn12.net :] i also sent an email to the registrant to see if he'd be willing to sell it. we'll see.

just ranting ...

Man that's bunk! MN12.net just isn't the same as MN12.com... Kinda dumb to make a porn link page there I think...

I've noticed a similar thing a couple of times lately. I don't know how, but I think these porn places have figured out how to intercept domain name queries, so if they see someone is checking names out, they snap it up'cause they think there must be some reason people would be looking for a name that will bring traffic. They're probably somehow scanning requests to name providers' IP addresses...

It might not be so bad if they have nude women on thunderbirds and cougars. Just kidding It realy pisses me off that people will just hog all the good names and want to charge absorbant prices to get them for your self.

Maybe if we involve FoMoCo, a suitable site would get mn12.com

They probably get stats from google, altavista, etc.

edit: typos

smart thinkin, Greenbird. there have been TONS of legal battles over domain names like this, and i'm sure the law would side with a more "legitimate" hoster.

btw, i contacted the guy who purchased the domain, and here's what he had to say:

"After consultation with my superior I have been informed that we would
consider $USD300 a reasonable price for this domain name. If this is
agreeable, we can start the payment and transferral procedure
immediately."

well, considering i've been paying like $13/year for my other domains, i'll probably hold off on shelling out $300 ... at least for right now.
