Next summer when i get a real job, I want to either rebuild my car, or get a new(er) car. I love my car to death and I cannot see myself selling it...every time i get on the throttle and hear the v8 roar, i almost slap myself for thinking of eventually selling it...but it will have near 150k on it by then and I dont know if it would be worth rebuilding. my plan would be to save some money for a few months and redo suspension parts (bushings, UCA's, shocks, etc), then build a motor, tranny, and rear end (not saying what combo :) ). Would there be many problems with a higher mileage car with a new motor and suspension? I dont want to spend all this money and have a fender break off or anything (exaggeration i know, but still). Advice please? :)

Thanks

Weigh the good and the bad. Is your car, with 150k worth putting a good amount of time and money in, when it needs alot of work to begin with? Or would money be better spent on a newer car? Try making a list of pros and cons. New Car, T-Bird.

I had the same dilemma with my 167k mile T-Bird. Decided to swap out the engine (had the car since I was 15) and then decided to add a supercharger. I already had the drivetrain done for the most part so it was a no brainer. Started doing more and more and I'm still going. Guess I should repaint it sometime and fix the door hinge but speed is better. :)

If you plan to replace the drivetrain, and rebuild the suspension then you shouldnt have any worries. If the doors are starting to sag then replace the hinges. Maybe Ive just been lucky, or these cars are just damn tough, but so far the only big items on mine have been the fuel pump this last summer and the alternator early last year.

Don't forget about a heatercore if your cooling system was abused.

honestly, in this day in age, 150k isnt old at all. i wouldnt be worried, hell i come from a world where running 25psi on a 150k motor and driveline is common.

I believe it's different for everyone.

Some things I've done: air silencer removal, built-up original transmission, 220kph speedometer, Richard M intake upgrade, Dynomax exhaust system, SC seats for front, J-mod, auxillary transmission cooler, underdrive pulleys, Apten chip....all after the car had more than 165,000 miles on it (J-mod was at 227,000). Ye Olde Car is at 481,320km (299,078 miles....) as of this post. I bought the car in 1997 - the car had 28,032 miles on it then.

i was in the same position as you this past summer. i finally graduated college and landed a good paying job and decided i wanted a really fast car. i wanted something with 500+ rwhp that would run deep in the 11's, look good and still be streetable, reliable and capable of being a daily driver if neccessary. so i had to decide if i wanted to keep the bird or try something else. i made a pro's and con's list like someone suggested and after i was done i realized that it would cost way to much money to do what i wanted to do with the bird so i traded it in toward my Cobra. Now i'm well on my way to my goals, although i do want another bird for a second car/daily driver and it would remain bone stock

Yeah, the pro's con's list looks like a good idea, but its not near the same situation as yours. I WISH I would afford a cobra, then I'd definitely replace the bird. Its either making my car quicker (low 13's probably) and do high mileage maintenance, or getting a mid 15s car that I can afford insurance for. I think I need to just total up what all the mods will cost for the bird and see if its even possible for me to make that much :)
